I will admit that I have not done a good job in my younger days of having a skincare routine and being mindful of sun exposure. However, what you could do first is to follow a specific at-home exfoliation for an optimal period of time before you attempt any product with actives.
I am in my early 40s and I use a toner, vitamin C serum and in the evenings I use a retinol night cream. My skin feels so much better for it.

What you could do for your dry skin is a two-fold process. As a licensed esthetician, I’d recommend a trip for consultation to your dermatologist or an esthetician. You will learn a lot from an experienced and caring skin care specialist. But if you do know that you skin type is DRY skin, you need to find the products and get your skin care routine right to provide what your skin needs: moisture and food.
First step, you need to open up your young and healthy skin cells to improve product penetration and the effect of the active ingredients in that product(s). This is achieved by regular light exfoliation with the right products.
Second, use a rich cream or lotion for your PM/night skin care regimen.
For the daytime skin care, wear a lotion with Hyaluronic Acid that would protect your skin from TEWL (transepidermal water loss).
I didn’t really worry about wrinkles or good skin care routines until more recently. Now, that I’m getting close to menopause, I definitely am more concerned about it. I need to try to wear sunscreen more often. I usually wear a hat when I’m outside now, but I don’t think its enough.
