Peptides have been a hot subject for a while. But frankly, do you know the types of peptides in skin care products you use and what they are for? I decided to dissect this topic into bite sizes to support women in making the best self care decisions they rely upon.
I often hear women are raving about this or that peptide. They probably are right, as it did what they were expecting it to do. However, we all have unique needs, hence we need different types of peptides. I’ll explain types and sources of peptides to showcase their ultimate qualities at work on our skin.
What Are Peptides?
Peptides are small particles made of amino-acids. Peptides are the building blocks for proteins like collagen. Having peptides in your body signals to the collagen that it needs to rev up its productions, so to say.

In this post, I discuss yet another interesting and effective technique for collagen production – Myofascial Self Release.
Though peptides are small, it is not a guarantee that they will get through the skin barrier.
You may already know peptides have the ability to signal your body to regenerate more proteins and firm your skin by restoring your collagen and elastin, as well as repairing your melanin and making your skin look smoother and brighter.
Types of Peptides in Skin Care
You will find a lot of different types of peptides in skin care. If you are the person who is curious to know about peptides, then it would be beneficial to be aware of these main groups of these actives for skin care products.
The main peptide groups you may find useful to know about are these:
– signaling peptides
– carrier peptides
– enzyme-inhibiting peptides
– neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides
– antimicrobial peptides.
Signaling peptides send their messages to different parts of the skin to produce more collagen, elastin, fibronectin, proteoglycan, glycosaminoglycan and other proteins in the skin. These types of peptides have anti-inflammatory effect on the skin, as they contain antioxidants. Hence the skin feels calmer and more soothed leading to less internal inflammation. Besides, with additional production of collagen and elastin, your skin will feel and look firmer.
Carrier peptides have been designed to carry other ingredients and actives into the skin
Enzyme-inhibiting peptides are designed to block activity of certain enzymes.
Neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides block the release of chemicals that cause the muscle contraction of expression lines, thus smoothing wrinkles and fine lines
Antimicrobial peptides are a vast group of peptides that occur naturally. They restrict and kill yeasts, fungi, viruses, bacteria and cancer cells. Thus these peptides can truly be called the first line of defense for our body.
Peptides in Food You Eat
Our food is bursting with peptides! Both animal and plant sources of foods have beneficial peptides in them. Here are just a few of them!
- Beans and lentils
- Eggs
- Fish
- Meat
- Soy
- Oats
- Flaxseed
- Wheat
Consuming a balanced diet will add more beneficial peptides to your body. Combining quality foods with quality skin care products containing peptides has a powerful effect on the skin.
Do Peptides in Skin Care Products Work?
Peptides in skin care products work. Only I would add one significant “if.” IF a skin care product is formulated with quality skin actives, then adding peptides into the formulation would become as a potent benefit to your skin care routine.
Some of my favorite peptide are marine peptides, silk peptides, copper tripeptides, palmitoyl pentapeptide (the one that stimulates collagen and elastin fibroblasts).

Do Peptides for Skin Make the Skin Look Younger?
When peptides signal your skin to produce more of collagen, for example, this process has a positive effect on the skin color and brightness, firmness, less wrinkles and fine lines, resulting in a younger look.
When the skin foundation is being maintained, and here I mean your collagen, elastin, keratin are constantly regenerating, then you will naturally have a more beautiful skin texture that boasts of strength and resilience.
Peptides Benefits
As peptides have a small size, they can be really effective to fight fine lines. As peptides stimulate collagen production, our skin gets a stronger and bouncier structure, which are the characteristics of a younger skin.
Along with being proactive collagen builders, peptides have a very attractive feature of relaxing muscles. Obviously, they are not quite the same as Botox, but they do this muscle relaxing ability.
You see, peptides inhibit the signal for muscle contraction thanks to which the facial muscles remain more relaxed.
Another amazing characteristic of peptides is that they perform a role of a carrier for other skin actives. For example they carry elements like copper to help with collagen production.
Functions of Peptides
•Signal collagen production
•Relax muscles in the skin
•Act as carrier proteins
What Peptides Should I Use for My Skin Care?
Some of the best products containing peptides are Serums and Creams.
Serums are highly concentrated and absorbed by the skin easily.
Creams have a good penetration and they do so deeper than thicker oils and ointments which have bigger molecules.
Don’t make a hype out of peptides, rather use them according to your skin’s needs. Yes, peptides can be used in our early 20s and 70s, and 80s. There’s no restriction. But the types of peptides can vary depending on your needs at that age.
For example, some younger women have such a sun-drenched skin, they would need a lot of soothing repair and conditioning of such skin. That is why age and need go hand-in-hand together when deciding on the type of peptide for your skin care regimen. Peptides are powerful when you use them with knowledge and understanding of their role in our skin repair and maintenance routine.

The truth is that the number one thing I look when I am exploring a new product is the quality of the ingredients in it. If a product is loaded with chemicals and additives, fragrance and petroleum products that contribute to a greater skin oxidation, no peptides will help you in maintaining your skin’s youth and health. It happens due to the oxidative power of all those bad skin actives that negate the powerful presence of a peptide.
Clearly, if you see some products with peptides and an overall quality ingredients, go ahead and try it. Personally, I have tried many peptides and different peptide-based products. Some of them I loved, and some of them I didn’t.
You are a unique body and spirit. Learning about different skin care ingredients will support you in your anti-aging skin care routine at every stage of your life.

So, where do Peptides fit in your Skin Care Routine?
Without a doubt, including peptides in your skin care regimen can do significant repair to the skin structure. One of the effective places to include a peptide skin care product is during a night skin care routine.
For example, you use a cleanser, apply a peptide serum, follow with a retinol product, and finish with a moisturizer. In this combination of products, all of the ingredients work towards cell regeneration.

A fact is that when peptides are surrounded with the other anti-aging skin care ingredients, the synergistic effect on the skin is truly powerful. Elina Organics, for example, uses Tremella or Snow mushroom extract to add to the Copper peptides in her Angelite Crystal Elixir. Actives from the mushroom have a natural ability to hydrate and moisturize skin and rejuvenate skin on the cellular level. Explore and buy this product HERE.
During our night’s sleep, our collagen and elastin are generated, and new cells are born. That is why peptides could definitely play their role in skin regeneration.
I have some detailed posts on other ingredients used in skin care products that are not clear to users why they need them.
Check out Hyaluronic Acid Benefits for Women’s Skin. This is one of the golden ingredients you need to understand well in order to use correctly.
Another “mysterious” ingredient that many have confusion about is retinoid. But which one? Discover all types of retinoids and their difference in your Anti-aging Retinoid Therapy.

I’m going to be honest, until reading this I knew ZERO about peptides. I’d heard of them but I’d never read up on them at all. Sounds like my skin would benefit from the Natural Peptide Mask!
Tena,
Peptides are powerful ingredients. They do make a difference be it a younger or more mature skin.
Just keep in mind that other, surrounding, ingredients make a huge difference on what is consumed by your skin, i.e., your body.
Hugs, CWT

Aisasami,
Great you’ve got it on board. Peptides are a definite support to our overall skin condition and health. Youthful looks – oh, yes, mami!
I have heard of peptides before from my daughter as she uses a lot of skincare products, and I can totally see its effect on her. Her skin is glowing and more soothing. I’ll definitely try out these peptide products.
Peptides are powerful for skin health and looks. Just make sure you take a look at ALL ingredients in the skin care product. Often, brands push all those cheep ingredients that are not good to our health. Those ingredients are either toxic to some extent or are oxidants or become catalists to other ingredients that become toxic once they are mixed together.
This a great informative post for body grooming and self care. Thanks for sharing

Ayi,
Glad you found it educational. If you use skin care, then it is the topic you can benefit from.
This is a very informative post about peptides. It’s really good to know which ones do what.
Sherry,
There are so many peptides out there, you need a chart by your hand to figure out what’s what!
But really, it is simpler that it appears to be. Look for the companies with the ingredients that come from nature and who use peptides together with such ingredients.
It is the synergy that really makes magic come true.
This is so helpful especially since I have recently gotten into skincare and trying to figure out the right routine for my skin.
Hannah,
Glad that it’s helpful to boost your own skin care regimen and understand why you need this or that kind of a skin care product.
Reach out if anything, I’ll share my knowledge of what I know.
I had no idea about all of this to be fully honest, amazing information!!!! Sharing it across my network.
Chad,
Information is power. And it’s not just words.
When I first began my journey in the skin care universe, nothing was available online. All was done through a physical handling and research.
I find it fascinating to know cause-effect of different ingredients in skin care products. Many women are confused about which product to get, what each ingredient does, and if a product is non-toxic to their body.
So, I share information that is scattered all over the places and serve it to my amazing readers.
I always learn so much at your blog and find it really interesting that peptides are found in so many foods. Good to know for skin health!
Yes, Anne Marie,
Our food is important. That is why they say that gorgeous skin isn’t just the result of skin care products. We need to feed it inside-out.
Thank you. You made me feel great saying that you learn something from my blogging.
I use peptides and I do think they work. My skin looks great for my age
Tara,
Yes to the peptides! So happy to hear about your results. You look gorgeous, GRL!
For me, I am a very picky gal who needs to know before choosing her skin care products. I really do a thorough research and then test different brands to find what my skin responds the best to and what I love the most.
This info is all new to me! I knew that many of my beauty products contained peptides, but I had no idea what they actually did! Thanks!
Glad you know now, Lisa!
When you know, you become pickier what you use on your skin. Just knowing what exactly those peptides do can boost your emotional state as well.
