My Golden Dozen of Essential Oils for the Face and Skin
Essential oils have proved themselves as powerful anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-fungal mediums. A lot of them are used for a variety of skin care concerns like acne and eczemas. But what are those oils that are OK to use in our regular skin care routine for the face and body?
Organic Rosehip Oil
This organic Rosehip essential oil is one of my favorites. It is a carrier oil as well as a potent mechanism to boost any woman’s skin care regimen!
This oil is filled with vitamim C that is critical during collagen production. The oil is also rich in retinoids that help brighten your skin and support its truly anti-aging functioning.
By the way, currently, retinoid therapy for women is one of the leading movements in dermatology. Everybody wants the best skin care results. Retinoids are the leading ingredient in the skin care to support the youth and longevity of the skin.
I talk in super details about different types of retinoids in this post about the Anti-aging Retinoid Therapy.
Roman Chamomile Essential Oil
For those with dry skin, this Roman Chamomile essential oil could go a long way. Using one of the carrier oils, you can dilute this essential oil and use it to hydrate and revitalize your skin.
Grapefruit Essential Oil
This Grapefruit essential oil is especially good for those with oily skin or hair. In fact, it is one of the best essential oils for acne. It can be easily added to other essential oils to produce a desirable combo effect.
I love this essential oil not just for its refreshing aroma. It is also an incredible companion for lifting the mood and fight acne. Mixing a few drops of this oil into my cream or lotion has been a routine for years now.
As far as aromatherapy, I use grapefruit essential oil in a diffuser during the day when I am at work. It creates a refreshing citrus smell which lifts my mood and allows me to feel more focused with a positive feeling inside.
Rose Essential Oil
The rose essential oil is a multitasker! It helps to moisturize your skin, thus supporting its youthful look. This oil has been used for centuries to nourish, hydrate and heal the skin issues. Palmarosa Essential Oil
For those women who want several benefits in one product, the palmarosa essential oil can be one of your best essential oils for the face. It is knows for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anti-aging properties. And it smells great! That is why, this oil is also a great aromatherapy companion. It helps to sooth feelings, calm and feel peaceful inside.
Lemongrass Essential Oil
Lemongrass is one of most favorite oils of all times. It can treat signs of skin aging as a natural antioxidant. With its immense antifungal and antibacterial properties, this essential oil can easily become one of your power tools on your beauty counter!
Helichrysum Essential Oil
A helichrysum essential oil can be placed in one line with those skin care products that are responsible for cell regeneration. This oil contains a chemical arzanol which is an anti-inflammatory substance that heals the wounds and minor cuts. This oil could be use in your skin care regimen to prevent scarring on the skin in those places that were damaged.
Frankincense Essential Oil
Still looking for best essential oils for the face? One of the sought-after is this truly magical Frankincense essential oil which is considered a powerhouse with anti-aging features. Some of the best known features are fine lines and wrinkle reduction.
In Ancient Egypt, the powerful and wealthy used this oil in their skin care to appear youthful looking with supple and glowing skin. Thus adding minute amounts of Frankincense into your lotions and creams could be that magic wand to keep skin’s radiance and freshness.
It is hard to find a skin care formulation that has quality ingredients appropriate for face and neck care. But a fact is that there are skin products out there that offer a powerful effect on the skin. Inna Organic is one of them.
I like their duo using Frankincense essential oil as a potent ingredient alongside with other ones. Frankinsence oil is known under many names, and some of them are Boswellia neglecta, Boswellia sacra, Oleo-gum-resin, Oliban, Olibanum, Ru Xiang and more.
Skin benefits of frankincense essential oil for face
Being able to use an essential oil for the facial skin is truly remarkable. Frankincense essential oil is known as a “liquid gold” among other essential oils. There are many quality gradations of this oil based on the way it was harvested. But what can you expect from using it in your skin care regimen?
There are three significant benefits this essential oil can produce for your skin.
It can smooth out fine lines and wrinkles by toning and lifting epidermis, hence such a beautiful fresh looking and youthful skin you get. Applying it regularly to the face and neck, you will tighten the pores. Frankinsence acts as an astringent in this case.
Frankincense essential oil balances hormone levels inside the body, hence it makes it an effective tool against skin conditions such as acne.
Anti-inflammatory properties of Frankincense make it a super effective skin care product to calm the skin complexion. Applying products containing this essential oil calms and soothes skin for people living with rosacea, sunburn, and many different skin breakouts.
When using Frankincense essential oil in your skin care products, an overall effect on the skin is anti-aging. And who is not willing to celebrate the skin they live in with beauty and well-being? I am for it!
Copaiba Essential Oil
Historically, this essential oil was used in healing and initiating ceremonies. So it is a prime member for the aromatherapy in your own home or in the office. Very light in fragrance, it creates a unique atmosphere with low stress and focus at the same time. Hence, it’s a prime candidate among some of the best essential oils for the face.
When it comes to using this oil in your skin care regimen, it goes nicely with the body cream. As it is high in beta-caryophyllene, it boasts of its anti-inflammatory properties. Beta-caryophyllene is terpene which acts as a cannabinoid. It doesn’t mean you will get high from it! No. Rather what it really means is that copaiba oil helps to reduce chemicals that cause oxidative stress, known as free radicals.
For skin care, it is super important to be protected from oxidative stress and function with more effectiveness. Beta-caryophyllene delivers oxygen molecules to cells, too! What a unique chemical found in many essential oils like copaiba!
Another interesting fact about beta-caryophyllene is that it protects brain from swelling and inflammation during a stroke to improve stroke outcome. Using copaiba essential oil in creams and lotions for the body, and also in aromatherapy, allows the beta-caryophyllene molecules to get into our blood stream to produce a positive effect against internal inflammation.
Other oils with beta-caryophyllene are rosemary essential oil, clove essential oil, melissa oil.
Check out this short video illustrating the Effects of Inflammation on our bodies.
Rosemary Essential Oil
This essential oil is a must-have when it comes to healing and keeping the scalp skin in great health. Rosemary essential oil helps to support blood flow to the scalp which can stimulate hair growth. Thus, adding to your hair care routine regularly is a given. I do it once a month.
Hair Mask Recipe #1
Add a few drops of essential oil (3 to 5 drops depending on your sensitivity to the smell) to the carrier oil (I use 1/4 cup coconut oil) and massage into the scalp. Wait for about 10-15 minutes while you are showering and wash off the hair mask. Follow with a hair conditioner.
Hair Mask Recipe #2
Or mix 1/4 cup of avocado and jojoba oil with 4-5 drops of rosemary essential oil. Massage the oil mask into your hair and wait for about 15 minutes before showering it off. Follow with a hair conditioner.
Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil
Definitely, this essential oil is a must-have for many different reasons. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiseptic and anti-seborrheic properties, ylang-ylang essential oil is an effective tool to include into a skin regimen to improve skin’s complexion and to treat various conditions. Yes, you can use this oil on your face when it is mixed with other carrier oils or your favorite lotion or cream.
When you feel low and need a lift, use ylang-ylang essential oil in your diffuser to get am emotional boost you deserve! It also encourages creativity and peace inside.
Why is it Important to Dilute Essential Oils Before Use?
You may already know that essential oils do not have lipids (fats) in them. That is why it is important to dilute your essential oil in a carrier oil or a moisturizer before using it on the skin.
Using pure essential oil on the skin could be a very drying experience for your skin that may produce all sorts of irritations and prolonged dry patches. Mixing your essential oil of choice with a carrier oil or a moisturizer means that it will have a barrier to slow down its absorption into the skin. As a result, the essential oil will stay on the skin longer, too.
Without a doubt, essential oils are very potent, and you need just a few drops to achieve their therapeutic result.
Carrier Oils to Try with Pure Essential Oils
The carrier oil is the one that is used as a base to dilute or mix an essential oil with. Usually, carrier oils are much less expensive than essential oils and can be used to make homemade cosmetics and skin care products.
Some of the best carrier oils for you to use are the following:
Apricot oil, avocado oil, evening primrose, grapeseed and guava seed oils, hemp seed and cucumber seed oils, jojoba oil, argan oil, coconut oil, sesame oil, sunflower oil, and sweet almond oil among many others.

Many people find that aromatherapy with certain essential oils can help promote relaxation and relieve stress and anxiety. However, most of the scientific evidence to support the anxiety-relieving properties of essential oils comes from animal studies.
