A million dollar question we seek an answer to is How to Slow Down Skin Aging. As we age, the outside signs of aging are displayed on our largest organ, our skin. Some people panic; some get depressed. And others find the courage to understand the aging process, and discover and apply the effective ways to slow down skin aging.

There’s no denying the facts that really play a trick on human’s skin. Smoking, alcohol, junk food, sedentary lifestyle, excessive overexposure to the sun – all have their hand in making our skin feel and look aged. We usually begin taking care of ourselves when we are presented with the effects of the aged skin: wrinkles, lack of luster and loss of skin vibrance.
Here are the top ten things that are connected to the skin health. Take a look at them! Some of them will raise your brow. But it’s OK. I’ve researched and read a lot of clinical studies, articles and talked to dermatologists and plastic surgeons to create this list with the key factors that affect any woman’s skin aging process.
How To Slow Down Skin Aging
The ingredients on this list are so obvious that they affect our skin health. However, like in any subject, we need, first, to understand the concept, then work with the principles that guide and define it.
Your Positive Thinking Affects Skin Aging
Imagine feeling yourself happy and joyful. Then notice how your facial expressions change, especially how your facial skin sags, when we feel sad, depressed, gloomy.
Just for a brief moment test those two opposite thinking states. First, think happy and exhilarated. Then, change that happy thought to a most sad and depressed state you can imagine and think. With that, notice how the skin on your face has slowly moved down the jowls lines.
It is a proven fact that positive thinking affects skin aging in a most profound way. Empower yourself with a positive affirmations, positive self-image, and practice it every single day.
Positive Thinking is one of the aging skin treatments that almost nobody talks about! Be your own healer and begin with thy own thoughts.
Importance of Sleep for Skin Aging
Sleep is the top of your priorities if you want to extend the vibrance and health of your skin for many years ahead of you. Here, I am not talking about the daily naps. Nope, they won’t work when it comes to a youthful regeneration of your skin as an organ.
You see, you can literally be in charge of your skin aging reversal when you take control of your sleep process.
Check out the must-have ingredients for a Quality Sleep Any Woman Needs.
During the REM cycle, we experience the key anti-aging effects our body generates for us. Skin is the prime benefactor of such process. Science shows that you can literally ‘sleep your skin younger.’
During sleep and its many phases, the body undergoes restructuring and rejuvenation. As far as the skin, the collagen production goes at full speed during the sleep cycles. With collagen, our many organs, including skin, receive new reserves of this golden ingredient. You look younger when you have less fine lines and wrinkles, don’t you?
The human growth hormone (HGH) makes our skin stronger and more resilient to the outside damaging factors. The skin’s bi-products are carried away, and new nutrients are carried in to feed and slow down the aging of the skin. These are some of the primary processes taking place during the sleeping hours.
Chronic or irregular sleep patterns will let you know that you are not getting enough of your precious Z’s. And the skin will be the first to react negatively to signal such shortage of sleeping hours.
Weight Control for Younger Looking Skin
Yes, you guessed it right. Weight gain directly affects the health and the looks of your skin. To be more precise, it is the collage quality that will change with every cycle of the weight gain and loss. Look what’s happening inside the skin!
But first, what is collagen? Collagen is a protein thanks to which your skin looks tight and pliable at the same time.
Collagen lifts your facial structure and holds it in place, protecting what’s under the skin.
When you are on a diet that pushes your body into a rapid weight loss, drastic things can happen to your skin.
When you diminish and restrict food intake, you automatically cut off essential nutrients into your collagen structures. As a result of a rapid weight loss and lack of quality care of skin during this critical moment for the entire body, the collagen becomes fibrous and less elastic.
If you are interested in maintaining your collagen levels throughout your life, check out what self myofascial release can do for you.
Learn more about fascia and myofascial release that can be done from the convenience of your home. Your skin, flexibility and quality of your body looks will improve.
You may have seen people who lost a lot of weight fast, and who have the faces that lack a bouncy, vibrant look. The reason behind it is a fibrous collagen and its lost ability to shrink to its initial size. It is always better when a weight loss process is a slower process. Instead of losing 10 pounds a week, opt for one. But such slower change in weight will allow your skin adjust to a new perspective much better.
Straight Posture Does Affect Your Skin’s Youthful Look
You may chuckle at the concept of having a good straight posture in order to enjoy an anti-aging effect on your skin. Just pause for a moment and reflect whether you are standing and walking, sitting and working at your desk with a straight posture.
The moment you begin to favor your flexor muscles in your posture and pay little attention to your extensor muscles, the facial muscles respond, too!
Do this quick test in front of the mirror. First, stand straight, with your shoulders up and moved back and lowered. This is your perfect posture. Feel how nice and tight your facial muscles are.
Then, roll your shoulders to the front and make your upright posture become nonexistent (just for a moment). Do you feel how quickly your facial muscles lost their tension?
The lesson of this silly, but may be not so silly, exercise is to showcase that your Straight Posture is the key to a long-thriving skin health. And feet health plays the key role.
In addition, good posture is in direct proportion to the amount of fresh blood your facial skin, and other organs in the head, receive.
Skin Aging Prevention with Healthy Eating
It is a huge YES to whole foods in your daily diet. More vegetables that have plenty of fiber, minerals and micronutrients allow your skin get an optimum nutrition. Plus fiber serves as an effective cleaner of bi-products. Adding more fruit and berries to daily meals will load your skin with antioxidants of many kinds. Free radicals and many skin conditions could be prevented when we allow our food to be our medicine.
One more important element of our healthy eating is good chewing of the food we consume. Even when the quality of your food leaves more to be desired, you could help to deliver more nutrition to your skin and organs by chewing well and slowly.
Per recommendation by dietitians, we need to chew each piece of food between 20-25 times prior to its swallowing!
Do you do it? Frankly, I discovered this fact when I was in my early twenties, and incorporated it into my lifestyle.
When we chew slower and longer, we allow the digestive enzymes from saliva to prepare and partially digest the food before it gets into our digestive tract.
One more important fact about chewing the food well and longer. You will reach a state of satiety sooner! Yes, it is very exciting, as you end up eating less while enjoying your food more.
The health of our digestive health can be monitored regularly by the color of our tongue.
Another quick test for you. Look into the mirror with your mouth wide open and your tongue out. A healthy tongue should be pink and moist and free of any coating. A slight white coating is OK. However, if you see that your tongue is heavily coated or/and has a different color, it may be a sign of a condition that calls for your attention.
TIP: Use a Tongue Scraper every day, morning and evening, to eliminate any coating from the tongue. This way, you are helping internal organs and skin to cleanse as well.
You can get tongue scrapers for adults HERE. Go for a stainless steel one!
Eating Habits Add or Prevent Premature Skin Aging
As you can see from the above that a rapid weight gain or loss contributes to skin aging. Now, several large clinical and epidemiological studies point out that healing abilities of the skin enhance.
Also, different studies note that “anti-aging, anti-carcinogenesic, and pro-wound healing effects of fasting” are more prominent during fasting.
The intermittent fasting is one of the ways to create an optimal way to get the nutrients into the body during an eating window, and then allow the body to rest during a fasting window. I will write more on intermittent fasting, as it calls for more clarification, but I love the side effects it produces in my life. Check out this article on the anti-aging benefits of intermittent fasting here.
Drinking Enough Water for Slowing Down Skin Aging
Water is our amazing tool to keep our skin hydrated and looking beautiful. Clean water can do wonders to our bodies during the day. Lack of water can cause head aches and low energy levels, as the toxins have a slower rate leaving our bodies. But once we re-hydrate, we feel so much better!
Skin is the direct benefactor of clean fresh water. Add a drop or two of lemon juice to your morning water to support your digestive system as well.
The amount of water needed for a grown-up person during the day is approximately 1 to 1.5 liters. That does not include any soup, tea, smoothie consumption. We need to allow clean water into our body to hydrate and help carry out any cellular bi-products.
Physical Activity Contributes to Your Skin’s Healthy Glow
Physical exercise is one of the prerequisites for a healthy skin. It provides more oxygen flow, energizes the body and allows the skin to glow naturally. With the oxygenated blood flow, the skin receives fresh nutrients necessary to boost its immunity and strength. And yes, being physically active contributes to the skin’s anti-aging qualities when you are enjoying physical activity during your life.
If you are a woman who is looking for how to slow down skin aging, here they are the powerful and effective ways that literally prevent the premature skin aging. Of course they require an investment! But the most sincere investment among others is your desire and actionable steps towards your glowing and effervescent skin.
Skin Care Products and Regimens to Stop Aging from Inside
When you would like to add some skin care products to boost your skin health and resilience, think of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and Retinoids.
Did you know that Hyaluronic Acid is part of your physical body and acts as a protective matrix from pathogens? This unique ingredient can become one of your go-to sources for healing and rejuvenation. Use products with HA or use it as is. I give a list of my favorite skin care products that represent quality of Hyaluronic Acid.
Check this post for products and fabulous benefits of Hyaluronic Acid for Women.
Also check out this post about skin during menopause where I discuss different types of conditions and skin care products. But what is truly valuable is that these products are effective for women who experience such skin conditions.
Taking advantage of anti-aging retinoid therapy, you need to understand the connection between retinoids and collagen – your guide for a healthy plump skin.
Nitric Oxide Skin Care Products
To provide more oxygen to the skin means your skin will be getting the required equivalent of nutrients for its life cycle. The more oxygen, the better it for the skin health.
Did you know that our bodies produce Nitric Oxide? With age, poor eating habits and no exercise, the production of nitric oxide can be very limited. That is why any woman would appreciate a fact that there are some quality skin care products that can help.
Besides moving ample oxygen amounts to the skin cells, nitric oxide fights inflammation. And with that feature, you can think and talk about anti-aging effect of nitric oxide on the body overall.
I have a detailed post about nitric oxide benefits for woman’s well-being. You’ll learn the best sources of nitric oxide and find the clinically-proven skin products to add to your skin care routine.

There is a million ways to keep healthy and fit. But when we are consistent in doing ours, it becomes a powerful manifestation of who we are and who we are becoming in life.
I use micellar water in the morning and then an SPF cream before going out. In the evening I cleanse, then use a Vitamin C serum and then a retinol night cream.
You know your skin car for sure!
Keep going, GRL!

Laura,

Ladena,
Kudos to you, GRL!
Retinol is one of the awesome ways to support your skin to remain young and vibrant.
It takes a few key points when it comes to using retinoids.
Check out this detailed post on all the differences of retinoid products and how you can benefit from the. I also included NON-toxic product examples vetted by me scrutinized review ==> https://celebratewomantoday.com/anti-aging-retinoid-therapy-healthy-plump-skin/
Though I have good genetics helping me out I know I won’t always look young. I have been drinking more water lately and I would like to find really good skin care with hyaluronic acid in it.
Monica,
Good for you, Monica!
Hyaluronic Acid products will help to hydrate, but they won’t contribute to your skin’s elasticity and freedom of movement. You can add some effective manipulations/exercises to the facial skin to keep it free of connective tissue that binds the skin to the muscles and bones, which creates spasms, pulls and sagging.
Also, one tip to keep in mind – the position of our teeth. As we age, teeth can be affected by grinding and sinking deeper into the spasmodic muscles. Having a qualified orthodontist can keep your teeth in close to the position when you were in your 20s.
You see, it takes the support of several specialists to keep our skin in awesome shape and condition, you included!
Hugs and continue on the path to your personal well-being.
This is a very helpful and through post. I’m not worried about looking older but I could do with improving my skin care routine so that my skin is healthier.

I loved that quick posture test and how it affects our skin. I never really knew that! I definitely need to work on mine.

Skin aging is definitely more than creams and lotions we could leather up over it.
It is lifestyle choices that form and lead to a healthy and beautiful skin.

So true that we have control what we can do with our body.
I think I have been breaking too many of the rules and my skin shows it. I need to eat better, drink more water, get better sleep. Thanks for the list it reminds me to do better.
Monique,
Nobody’s perfect. But making one tiny change and sticking with it for a while will lead you to a better place in life.
Thanks was very informative! Have showed this to MrsFrugalSamurai and she loved it!
Minding the problems we have with our bodies and making commitment to take action to change them are the necessary steps to happen.
These are some great ways to slow down aging. I feel food, stress, and sleep are the major culprit when it comes to aging. I prefer eating healthy, minimize stress, and have good sleep to slow down the process of aging.
Mayuri,
You are doing something right to slow down the adverse affects of living!
These are really important points that go on to explain why some people look so young and happy while others dont. Positive thinking is definitely in everyone’s hands to monitor
One of the key points for sure. But we need to take care of a well-rounded complex of processes that affect our health and the looks as we age.
I actually need to start taking more water intake. I am just missing out on it!
Monidipa,
Without water, the body retains all the gunk and toxic waste created by our natural processes.
I keep a bottle with water on my desk. Plus, I get up every 40 minutes to do my special stretches to get lymph going, up the heart rate, and drink water.
I’m at that age. I can see my skin is getting change. Now I do exercise routine and more eat plenty of vegetables than before.
Yudith,
It is so cool that you have created a routine that works for you to keep you going, feel energized and looking awesome.
This was super interesting to read about! Very useful information.
Glad to support all the gals out there!
Happy New Year, Emily!
Two of my goals this year, especially since I am expecting a baby, are a daily walk and more water intake.
Anne Marie,
These are very powerful steps you are incorporating into your daily activities.
Both walking and clean water allow lymph to move better, get rid of toxins in your body, and add more energy to the living as a result of these changes.
This is super helpful, might need to start a new skincare routine.
Krysten,
Happy to support your efforts!
I am at that age that it’s very important to take care of my skin to prevent aging! These are advice that will help me for sure!
Catalina,
Happy 2021 Year to you!
Happy to support your efforts, if you want me to.
This post got me drinking two glasses of water now. Hehe
Nikki,
That’s what urgency does: You realize it and take ASAP action.
Please continue with this urgency every day this year.
Hugs, my awesome!
So informative! Good thing I’m always hydrated cuz I love drinking a lot of water. I will share this with my wife.
Ryan,
Happy New Year to you!
Happy to support you and your family if and when you need it.
These are really awesome tips! Thank you so much for sharing!
I feel like drinking more water should be the easiest way to get better skin. Yet I struggle with it so much!
Monica,
Drinking only solves part of the problems for skin and our overall health. But this is a great beginning place.
This is great to know. I’m glad you shared these tips with us. I’ll have to save this.
Welcome, Kathy,
Just a bit of knowledge can save us a lot of frustration.
Thank you for all the anti-aging tips. I need to start caring for my skin.
Jackline,
Just know that starting is never too late. You can have a beautiful skin when you care for its health.
Hugs!
My weight definitely fluctuates so I want to work on that. These are great tips
Krystel,
I am so happy you’ve got something of use from this post.
Reach out if you need support!
I always believed in nourishing my skin from the inside out. So staying hydrated is very important for me. I also use topical creams to address some dry spots and to prevent the early onset of fine lines and wrinkles.
Eileen,
It is a great way to realize and act upon your skin’s needs. Keep going!
There was a time when I wouldn’t pay attention to this at all, but now I’m all over it and all about the skin care secrets. Thanks a bunch for putting this together!
Christopher,
Sooner or later, skin needs do catch up with us if we do not address them. Ditto.
There is so much one can do to keep the skin in a good shape longer. Healthy eating, drinking water and good skincare routine is a must x
Laura,
The only thing to do is to ACT upon it, yep.
I will love to try collagen I think is great for skin I heard it affects the ability to get pregnant tho.
This are great skincare tips. I had no idea that sleep affected the aging of skincare. I will be more mindful of the amount of sleep as part of my skincare routine.
What a great post. As soon as I read about the posture, I quickly straightened in my chair! LOL I do most of these things, but I fear though that my skin had a bit too much sun exposure when I was a teen. I used to lay on my roof, covering in baby oil, trying to tan. Although we never burned like today. Great tips, thanks for sharing.
Margaret,
The sooner we realize what is happening to our skin and why, the more powerful the reaction to our action would be.
I do need to drink alot more water. I had no idea about the benefits of tongue scraping!
Bree,
We learn as we go along the path of our lives.
Great that you learned something new. Now – the action part is for you.
Good suggestions for skin care. For me skin toner is very essential and I use it regularly. Day and night creams and sunscreen creams are a must. Well additionally I visit the parlor for a facial.
Kuntala,
It is awesome you are aware of your skin needs. Keep doing it, GRL!
Agreed. Eating healthy and getting great rest is the key to great aging skin.
I really enjoyed reading this especially as I have just turned 30 and am starting to think about skin aging and how to slow it down. I need to work on sleep for sure! Thanks for sharing!
Hannah,
One thing at a time. Once you get sleep under control, then attempt the next most needed ingredient for a happy, healthy, beautiful skin.
I have no idea skin care has so many aspects. There are so many things to consider and learn from it. These are very good information.
Ruth,
Yes, there’s a ton of information on skin care. But you don’t need to learn everything at once.
Making new habits is a step-by-step process. Just take one new thing and adapt to it. Be consistent.
Then, take another one and repeat the process.
Hugs!
Sleep and drinking enough water are so important! Interesting to read that weight also has an effect on your skin though!
Maartje,
Yes, weight fluctuation is one of the biggest changers in our skin looks. Controlling one’s weight is one of the important keys to have a gorgeous skin.
I love affects of positive thinking, I hope they actually work… at least I believe so.
Unta,
That which cannot be touched doesn’t prove it isn’t there.
Positive thinking is the key to our visualization and self-actualization.
I agree to all these. Water and enough sleep really plays a big role in our skin’s youthful glow.
Jhentea,
Ditto, my friend.
I’ve done a lot of experimenting in life to prove these two are so true.
We all want to slow down ageing I’m sure so these tips are really useful. Now I just need to follow some of them.
Ditto to that, Angela! ACTION is the key part of any cause-effect.
I know about how a healthy diet and drinking lots of water are connected to how beautiful and young your skin looks like.
Joanna,
So happy to hear it, my friend.
Keep hydrating and sleeping enough hours for a gorgeous skin!
I dont know a big deal about skincare but my wife religiously follows a daily skincare routine. Great tips.
Thank you, Chad!
Skin is a touchy subjects, as it is the first thing we see in a person.
Very good tips! I recently lost a large amount of weight over the span on 3 years and my skin is still recovering! I am definitely working on getting better sleep!
Awesome, Stephanie!
Yes, it is a process that goes hand-in-hand with time on this planet!

Ruth,
The first thing is to realize that you need it – you got it, you have it, you want it.
Now, begin with just ONE that you know you WILL DO!
Once you get used to a new habit, move on to the next.
Hugs, my Awesome!
This sounds amazing! Would love to give it a try!
Thank you for these tips! I have the age that I should begin thinking of these things.
Catalina,
It is awesome that you have realized it and are in the deciding mode.
There are so many things I am not doing that I better start doing to help my skin. I am in my 40s and have seen a change in recent years.
Sherry,
That is why you’ve read this post and now you are ready to take your first STEP for ACTION.
What a lot of fantastic tips! I never considered how negative thinking could affect aging skin. The one good thing I do is drink tons of water. But I’m going to focus on more of these tips.
Susan,
Happy to hear you got something of use for your own self!
Yes, negative thinking really does a negative number on our skin. Just imagine those two parallels forming between the brows when we are not happy about something or angry at something or somebody. Whew, we need to relax those negative lines and think with an open mind and positivity.
Hydration is key to keeping skin healthy. This is a really great routine to keep that skin watered!
Kita,
I am still in awe to notice how my skin changes when I don’t drink enough water within the day. I do remind myself to drink every couple of hours.
It’s really great to know these. I knew a few of them, but not all. The biggest thing I know I need to work on, is eating healthier.
Kathy,
Knowing what needs to improve is the key. The next will be your action step!
I’m at that age where I am noticing the changes in my skin. I am working on my routine but it’s not perfected just yet.
Heather,
The most important thing is that you continue your perfection of your routine. Being consistent is the key!
Now that I am 35, I have been serious about skincare–more now than ever. I wear hats, glasses, and SPFs like nobody’s business when I go outdoors.
Amy,
And that is the key – you are doing what is right for your skin and you, ultimately.
I do so many of these things. Maybe that is why I have nice skin
Tara,
You are the Goddess.
