Sitting is as toxic as smoking. Research has been pouring the data telling us that side effects from sitting too long can kill us. But before that happens, we will go through an agony of side effects, pains, and thousands of dollars in medical treatments. These days, I am proactive about what to do about sitting all day.
What Happens When We Sit All Day?
It is a legitimate question to ask ourselves of what exactly happens when we sit too long at our desks.
From my personal experience, I have a lot of friends who do computer and online work. What binds us together is a different degree of back pain. Some of us have a huge lower back pain. Some are complaining for a constant pain in the legs and arms and wrists. Wow, and this is only the smallest tip of an iceberg called “sitting all day syndrome.”

Get UP and Move Around!
Side Effects from Sitting Too Long
Other side effects from long hours of sitting are high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high cholesterol, poor posture, poor eyesight, weight gain. Just imagine how debilitating each condition can be. Worse than that, each of the above side effects can quickly develop into a chronic condition. Well, you don’t need to wait for that to happen!
The best thing is to open your mind and figure out What To Do About Sitting All Day.
Doing so is your way out towards your personal well-being.
To sum it up, the side effects of sitting too long at one place will bring debilitating conditions and suffering upon our bodies and psyche alike.
How Can I Stop Sitting All Day?
The first thing you can ask yourself – and really be truthful here – is how many hours you sit during each day of your life. Once you admit to yourself that your sitting habits are far from being within a healthy norm, the next step is create a DOABLE plan of action.
When I first realized that my physical body is going down the drain, I panicked. Then I put into action the following things to make my daily life a healthy living life. Though, I do still do a lot of online work.
Laura’s Tips For People Who Sit All Day
Things that I am doing now have become my lifestyle. You can check the list below and really take at least one tip to start turning your sedentary life into a living life. Your body wellbeing will thank you.
#1 Stand up and get away from your desk EVERY HOUR YOU SIT!
YES, it is imperative that you get up and walk, do jumping jacks, go around the block, do some laundry for about 5 minutes. I utilized my iPhone timer as a reminder for me to get up and move.
Now, I can actually do it without using my reminder. I’ve trained my body clock well. Activities that I alternate every hour include, but not limited to: yoga stretching, meditation, jumping, situps, starting my laundry, jumping jacks. You can add any of your activities. But what I found really, really helpful is the stretching! I will need to share the stretching that got my lower back pain out of my life. It will be a new post for you.
#2 Take your phone calls standing up
Every time I call or receive a call from someone else, I immediately get up and walk around. Obviously, if you need your computer screen for the conversation to flow, use it. But I most of the time, am doing just fine without any screen reference.
#3 Alternate your sitting and standing work time
There are many ways for you on how to alternate between sitting and standing during the work hours. Besides, you can find some some amazing companies who carry out research and testing of simple, yet effective devices for those who sit for long hours during the day.
In addition, we can enjoy a wide variety of ergonomic tools and devices that accommodate any computer or laptop size. Take for example, this handy WorkEZ BEST Laptop Stand from UNCAGED Ergonomics. It is light-weight, portable and multifunctional, too. It can be used as a Standing desk, Seated at Desk, in-Bed desk, and when you do your work sitting on the sofa.

Thanks to the flexible joints, I can customize height and angle of my laptop stand. Really, works so well for me during the day. I alternate my sitting and standing work hours. This ergonomic laptop stand is a must-have to everyone who wants to change the sitting patterns in their lives. Take it with you on the road if you wish. The stand folds up and is carried easily in the carry-on or suitcase.

The aluminum construction contributes to the light weight of this laptop stand, and it naturally cools a heated computer as well.
I love the company that leads the industry with innovative tools and options to make our un-sit the long hours sitting trends that dominate this nation. Check out their wobble stools and chairs, anti-fatigue mats, and even balance boards. All they do is figuring out hot to develop the most effective ways to get the sitting population stand up for their better health.

These ergonomic desks, stools and bikes are becoming more and more affordable these days! With the Black Friday deals, you can snap some of the best products on today’s market when it comes to standing desks.
#4 Wear good shoes when you sit or stand
What I found out for myself, it does pay off to wear the best shoes when I am sitting for long hours. Sounds silly, but there’s truth in it. With an adequate foot support, our entire body received a much better balance when we sit or stand during our work hours.
I tried out so many shoe brands. What has been working for me for the past two years is Therafit shoes!
You can find details on some options that are available for people who have foot pain and how to choose among a myriad of shoe brands on the market.

I wear my Therafit shoes all the time when I am working during the day. Their shock absorbing wedge technology with personal adapters help my feet to feel alive.
I do not need to worry about buying extra shock-absorbing insoles! They’ve been already installed into each and every Therafit shoe! These insoles support the heels.
And with the compression molded midsole, I feel like a Queen in these shoes. I walk in them, sit in them, and exercise in them, too.
Here’s my guide to the Best Therafit Sandals for Plantar Fasciitis and any woman who wants superior support for her feet.
By the way, I have several pairs of Therafit shoes that I use specifically for each activity. For example, I work in one pair, I exercise in a different pair. This separation of activities helps me to extend the life of my shoes. These Paloma Therafit shoes are some of the latest arrivals.

#5 Add some extra stretching to your daily routine
Sitting for long periods of time, especially with poor posture, makes your hip flexors tight, which causes the glutes (butt muscles) to lengthen to compensate. Adding some simple stretches breaks up the “sleeping” muscles and allow you to retain the flexibility.
You can also try Mayofascial Self Release that brings more flexibility and well-being to organs and muscles.
You see, you can add many things to change your sitting at the desk for long hours a much healthier experience. The next step you will do is decide how exactly you want to feel for the rest of your life. I have made my choice.

Amazing post. It was quite informative and I found a lot of practically amazing tips. Thanks for sharing it!
This hits home. My work has me sitting the whole day and I need to walk more and do more.
Kathy,
It it hit me hard. That is why I put it into the post to bring more awareness and more action on the part from all of my blogging sistahs and bros, too.
Every hour, it is a must to get up and do something for the body: stretching, brisk walking, yoga, vigorous running (on the same spot would do, too!).
These activities allow our muscles, heart muscle included, to be resupplies with fresh blood that carries nutrients and oxygen.
Every hour breaks would make our lives productive, happy, healthy. It is the best way for anti-aging life literally.
That adjustable standing table looks really nice. I really need that, I’m just sitting all day just to finish all my works. and that looks perfectly fine for me.
I have started going on walks in my colony, I would love these sneakers as they look real good..
I heard on the news today that sitting is the new smoking and it really struck a chord. We do sit so much all day!
Rosey,
It’s been known for years now. But the mainstream gets the message much, much later.
Taking a step to more activity every day is the way to achieve changes in your well-being.
You are absolutely right. There are things that we can do to improve yourself. While, just sitting down makes me thing of alot of things and write it down on my journal. Thank you for sharing this wonderful post.
Papa Jack,
Taking just one tiny step to more activity is the goal.
Increasing the activities will come with time.
I suffer from horrendous back pain due to sitting down to much. I do try to stand up and walk around every hour, but when it gets really bad only a chiropractor can help release the pain.
Joanna,
I’ve gone through a huge pain period in which I decided enough is enough.
I started to explore different ways to get my body back to a happy, healthy one.
The results achieved show that we can nurse ourselves back to health and happiness and youthful beingness.
I have a spondylosis due to degenerative didc disease and prolong sitting is really a no-no while I can’t stand too long as well due to my scoliosis.
I am guilty of sitting most of the day! I know that this is not healthy at all but I am trying to more, to walk more and to exercise more.
Chad,
Realizing that we sit too much is the first step.
The 2nd step is to actually make a step.
I began with putting an alarm for myself for every hour I sat.
I began, then, different activities that make my body to stretch, my heart to go into a faster beating, my body losing weight.
All is possible to get our bodies back into shape like we were in our 20s. It is possible! I am a witness of it.
Those shoes are mega cute, I’m in the market for a new pair of sneakers!
Krysten,
These are not just cute shoes! They are also the shoes with the patented technology to support the feet with plantar fasciitis. They are THERAFIT shoes.
I have been a fan of them for several years. I had a huge problem with my feet. These shoes did support my feet all day long.
This blog post is really very helpful and inspiring..sitting every time is really much harmful for our health to..Therefore these tips are indeed very meaningful and helpful..thanks for sharing them..will surely keep them in mind..
Keeping in mind is one thing.
Doing tiny steps is quite the next level of living. Happily.
Rightly said. The human body did not evolve to handle a 10 hour workday sitting in front of a computer. A 5 min break off the chair every hour is crucial for the body.
I am also guilty of sitting too much during the day, at work I’m trying to adjust but not much.
I hope I can so better tho.
These are great tips! It’d be better to get work done or do something productive rather than sitting all day, thanks for sharing!
Being active is so important! Life changing indeed.
Great ideas. I’m definitely guilty of too much sitting. Going to try to add some of these suggestions into my everyday.
I agree to all these. And a great pair of shoes really matters.
This is such a struggle for me. I gained 10 pounds from starting a job at my computer all day. I have to force myself to get up periodically even when I’m trying to finish something. I try to intentionally do things with my boys so that I will have to take breaks.
Marie,
You did the right thing to begin moving and getting yourself involved in your kid’s lives by partipating in their activities.
These are great tips. I used to work as a consultant and was glued to my desk for 8-9 hours a day. I got an Apple Watch and set an alarm for me to get up at least once an hour and every 3 hours I would take a 5 minute walk around the building.
Ashley,
That’s what I was doing when I realized I had to get up every hour and get my heart rate going.
I never sit. I work at a stand up desk and when I am not at my desk, I am on walks, or I am running errands or I am filming videos (standing up). I truly barely ever SIT down, until after 5:30 pm!
You are a true exception, GiGi!
Keep going, GRL!
its important to get moving around if you sit a lot. there is so much great information here. thank you
Thanks for the good ideas I sit a lot and need to start doing these tips.
I try to get a daily walk in and make sure that I do some stretching in the morning. I find that having the right pair of shoes makes a big difference in how I feel after walks and exercise.
Sounds good to me i need to do this
Usually a new pair of sneakers each year?
I buy new shoes when my old ones wear out which depends on the material the shoes are made of and what I use them for and how often.
I buy flats for work every six months, but sneakers are more like every two years. I have to buy work boots for my husband and shoes for my daughter.
I do not buy new shoes often enough. Maybe once every 1-2 years.
I am usually the last one in the family I buy shoes for so I buy them about once a year.
i buy shoes once a year
I tend to buy new shows only when my current ones are holey or make my feet hurt.
I buy new shoes for myself about once a year.
I have 5 children so I don’t buy myself new shoes until absolutely necessary even though I know I should
I only buy myself new shoes when I have to. Maybe every year or two.
I buy shoes maybe every six months
I buy new shoes about twice a year.
I buy shoes every couple of years for myself.
I buy w couple of pairs of shoes each year
Every few months.
I buy new shoes about 4 times a year.
I buy new shoes for myself approximately once a year, maybe twice depending. Thanks for the opportunity! 🙂
Last time I got some was probably more than eight years ago.
these shoes look really nice. love them.
I buy new shoes when they wear out. I know the value of wearing good shoes.
I buy shoes as I need them or hit a good sale a few times a year
I love these! Thank you for the chance!
I really can’t remember the last time I bought new shoes for myself…maybe five years ago? My shoe budget goes to my children. 🙂 Thank you.
I usually buy new shoes one time a year, maybe twice and get several pairs at a time to stock up lol.
It depends…usually a few times a year.
Only when necessary.
I usually buy new shoes once a year.
I buy new sneakers about once a year. I try to go on a 10-15 minute walk every two hours while at work. My hip can’t take sitting any longer than that.
Very, very rarely do I buy new shoes…I have been trying to find a pair like the one I bought a few years ago (and that have holes in them now) but I can’t find another pair like them. Thanks and God bless!
I buy a new pair of shoes for myself once every few years.
I know I NEED to buy new shoes (that is, sneakers) but It’s hard to do that while I’m having “foot issues.” Of course, I probably need to do that now BECAUSE I’m having “foot issues.” I know I don’t buy new shoes often enough. Probably less than once a year.
Elizabeth,
You wait not until your feet will have a hard time to walk!
Better to invest into quality shoes and feel comfortable.
Please make such a gift to your own wellbeing.
i don’t shop for shoes often
I stand at work all day so to sit is a blessing..
I buy shoes about either once a year or 6 months depending what I need..
I don’t buy shoes very often – maybe once a year or so.
It depends upon the type of shoe but exercise walking shoes I tend to purchase every few months because I walk most days outside for about a mile or so.
I buy shoes twice a year.
I rarely buy myself shoes.
Hi Dawn,
Anybody else buys you shoes? Or you get your shoes very infrequently.
I find myself buying every three months or so. My feet need really stable shoes when I walk or exercise. I need to pay attention to my shoes when they start to feel wabbly.
My current job allows me to sit for extended periods of time. I try to get up every half hour and walk around a bit. Works for me.
Blessings to you and yours!
Marie
Marie,
You are amazing! Keep doing these breaks, GRL!
I got myself into the situation when I exercised hard once a day, and then would sit for a long time doing work.
Once a day does not work!
Now, I do take breaks every hour. Plus, I work standing up and alternating it with my sitting time.
I commented on celebratewomantoday.com
I buy a new pair of sneakers every 3 to 4 months.Ii walk a lot and I feel that you should replace your sneakers often if you walk a lot.
Hi Laurie,
That’s what I do. Walking and exercising does wear all those soles out!
