Broccoli benefits for skin’s health and youthful looks are many. This is a quick note for those of you who are adding “new” items to their daily green foods.
If you are eating broccoli, the best way to eat it is either raw, sprouted or steamed. Why?
During the boiling and deep cooking, the enzyme – myrosinase – that is responsible for forming anti-cancerous and anti-inflammatory compound in broccoli will be destroyed. Without the myrosinase enzyme, broccoli, basically loses its golden diseases-fighting properties.
Also, please note if you are into supplements containing broccoli, you may not get what you’re looking for. One of the studies, just published, mentions both supplements and overcooked broccoli as deficient of the major enzyme myrosinase that is the key to broccoli’s beneficial qualities.
Include fresh broccoli in your daily feast of foods. Why? Just look at this short list of benefits to celebrate every day!
– Protects arteries against inflammation (and as you already know, inflammation is a precursor to many chronic diseases).
– Shields the gut from harmful flora that leads to stomach ulcers and cancer.
– Adds antioxidant protections to the lungs in those who smoke and in those who are just passive smokers, i.e., second-hand smoking.
Broccoli Benefits for Skin
The skin health advantages of broccoli are numerous and include:
Antioxidants and their role on skin’s health
Broccoli is a powerhouse of antioxidants that can aid in reducing inflammation and skin redness.
Lutein the Antioxidant
This carotenoid, found in abundance in broccoli, safeguards the skin against oxidative damage and prevents dryness.
Sulforaphane the Antioxidant
This powerful phytochemical present in broccoli shields the skin from sunburn and the detrimental effects of free radicals. When you include fruits and vegetables in bright yellow, red and orange colors, your skin gains access to this potent antioxidant.
As a reminder, photochemical damage to the skin is the number one reason your skin ages, i.e., becomes damaged to allow the aging process to take place.
Vitamin C the Antioxidant
Broccoli is a rich source of vitamin C, a vital nutrient for the production of collagen, the protein that forms the foundation of skin cells. Vitamin C has hundreds of benefits for skin and its well-being. One of the major reasons you want to have vitamin C in your daily diet is its supportive role for other vitamins and chemical processes.
For example, Vitamin C protects and enhances the effects from Vitamin E in your body. Tougher, they play in synergy to deliver the most efficient protections to your skin.
Vitamin A the Antioxidant
Broccoli is packed with vitamin A, which aids in the repair of fine lines.
Zinc benefits for Skin
This essential micronutrient responsible for maintaining skin health is found in broccoli.
Omega fatty acids for Skin’s Anti-aging
Extracts from broccoli are rich in omega fatty acids, which are effective in retaining skin moisture. And where there’s well-moisturized skin, there’s its youthful looks. Moisture allows a more efficient circulation of nutrients in and out of skin. It protects skin from inside and outside stressors and allows for quicker and more efficient healing.
In addition to these, broccoli seed oil is also beneficial in skincare due to its anti-aging and hydrating properties.
Don’t shy away from broccoli! It’s good, it’s yummy, it gives you more variety in your daily food menu.

Good thing I always steam brocolli, I include it in my diet a lot.
Broccoli is one of my most favorite veggies. I remember always ordering broccoli with Chinese when i was younger lol
No matter the way I love broccoli.
We love broccoli, only we eat the darker green kind. I heard that the greener the veggie is, the better it is for you… perhaps that’s untrue but it’s just something I’ve always stuck to LOL
Either way, steamed broccoli is delicious!
I like broccoli. I prefer to eat it raw than cooked, but my family is just the opposite. 🙂
Broccoli is my husband’s favourite veggie. This post definitely helps to know more about the goodness of broccoli. Thanks for sharing the link for broccoli recipe as well. Will love to try this for sure.
Great info here. I had no idea that great properties in broccoli are destroyed when you boil it, although I’ve never been a fan of boiling many foods anyway. I’m surprised that the photo is one of broccoli though, I’ve only seen a type of cauliflower that looks like that!
I love broccoli and always love learning new things and new ways to prepare it! Thank you!
I just started a new diet and broccoli is on the menu a few times a week. I had no idea that it contained all of these health benefits. Now I feel like I am doing something right! hehe. I guess I will continue with what I am doing. Thanks for sharing!
This ugh sound weird but I LOVE broccoli! Even as a kid, I would BEG for more broccoli for dinner. I love it raw, cooked, steamed and every way in between <3
Luckily I love steamed broccoli. It’s also a favorite of my kids, so I’m always on the lookout for a good, healthy broccoli recipe.
Love the prep ideas for broccoli! Our kids (inexplicably) love broccoli and they are always happy to see it on the plate!
We love Broccoli in our household and while I’m not quick to eat it raw, I love it sauteed or steamed. I could eat it every day. 🙂
I love broccoli and most green vegetables! yummy!
I love broccoli raw, cooked, and steamed but I’ve never heard of sprouted broccoli! I’m glad it has such great health benefits 🙂
Love broccoli- especially half cooked with a soy sos and a bit of garlic 🙂
I love Broccoli: it is colorful and delicious. I like it in soups or as with a healthy dip. Thanks for the reminder
I don’t buy broccoli very often. My husband doesn’t like the smell. I do like it but its not one of my favorite veggies.
Broccoli is also a favorite in my family. Can’t seem to get enough of it for sure.
I love when my kids choose this instead of french fries!! I feel like I win at motherhood that day! lol
Brocolli is actually one of my teenagers favorites which is a surprise!! I love my greens too.
I love broccoli! My son loves it, too.
Broccoli is among the veggies I do it. It like that it can be soft and juicy and absorbs a lot of taste in the spices.
Actually I happen to really like broccoli–raw, cooked whatever! I am by no means a vegetarian but I do love my veggies in general!
I love it anyhow, so I’m delighted to add more of it to my diet. I didn’t realize it was SO good for me though!
Broccoli has so many benefits!! Its one of my favorite green veggies, I prefer it steamed with lots of cheese sauce. Though the cheese sauce may out weigh some of the benefits.
I’m so grateful that broccoli is one of my kid’s favorite veggies! We always have it raw or steamed!
Is that Romanesco broccoli? I heard it was pretty good.
I need to eat more raw veggies….I prefer them cooked. I try to add them into salads.
Broccoli is my favorite veggie. I could eat it every day!
Thank goodness broccoli is one of my favorite foods. Now I have more reasons to include it in my recipes.
We love broccoli!! I make it so many different ways and the kids love it (thank goodness!)
I had no idea it had an enzyme for combating cancer. I usually steam it or serve it raw to my kids. They love broccoli.
Good to know. I usually steam, stir fry, or roast my broccoli. My kids would eat broccoli everyday- they love it.
Broccoli is my all time favorite and definitely a regular in our dinner rotation. Steamed and salted is my favorite, but my family loves it roasted with garlic. I will definitely be checking out your garlic broccoli recipe, thank you!
Thanks so much for sharing. I didn’t know there was a better way of eating broccoli. We eat if often in casseroles and such but I’m going to start serving it steamed and even raw. I’d love to sprout some as well.
