You will see a ton of conditioning products for wooden cutting boards made with “food-grade mineral oil.” Hey, you gotta keep in mind that mineral oil is a by-product of highly refined petroleum. Though it has been purified, it still remains PETROLEUM. Do you want petroleum – any part of it – become your integral body particle? My personal preference is to AVOID ANY PETROLEUM-BASED PRODUCT in Food and in Skincare, and Home cleaning items as well.

Don’t be fooled by words like “natural,” “food grade” when looking at the mineral oil. Yes, crude oil is natural, it comes out of the Mother Earth. It does not mean that it’s good for your body.

Do avoid these conditioning oils as they do become rancid and leave sticky, unpleasant residue.

Avoid: vegetable oil, canola oil, olive oil, tung oil (this one can pose significant allergy threat).
