Walking with friends. It’s a simple thing, yet it opens you just a little.
Eating with friends. Simple. Watching a kids soccer game together, sitting together at a dance recital with parents you’ve gotten to know. More simplicity.
The human touch, the physical presence of others in your life, no matter how transitory feels…nice.
Facebooking, Instagraming, these are nice too. It doesn’t feel the same as the physical presence of another person near you, interacting with you.
Seeing their eyes as they talk, watching them express themselves…it is a simple pleasure we don’t notice much, until it’s not there.
You can go days without that in-the-flesh contact with someone you know better than the lady who scans your groceries at the store. It is easy to shut them out, not because you want to, but because life is busy and there are so many things to do. When do you find the time?
How do you change that? How do you interrupt your crammed schedule to find…to craft little crevices of time to invite someone into your physical space?
Shaking hands, a hug, a touch on the shoulder, a smile. These are shared things that wrap you with life, with love, with acceptance.
It may seem simple, and it is. But the warmth of another person you enjoy being with, even in small doses, moves you to more peace, less isolation. opening you to more simpleness that is the foundation of joy.
Find a friend, a neighbor, someone near by, then meet at a Starbucks. Go for a walk together. Share a cup of tea. Talk. Listen. You be you, your friend be a friend. When you walk away after a hug, feel the peace that is now there inside you. Allow it to be, to gently spread warmth inside.
The simple touch of a friend. You’ll want to do it more. Reach out now to make it happen again, with the same person, or another. Do it before the glow of that touch fades.
The quiet joy of life is living inside the touch of friends.
