A scale doesn’t know your character, your inner nor outer beauty. It can’t measure the depth of your soul, nor the concerns you hold close to your chest.
A scale doesn’t know if you are talented, or a music lover. Can’t see if you feel love, or long for it.
A scale can’t reveal your dreams, see your potential, feel your pain, nor experience the fear that creeps in.
A scale can’t know if you are getting ready to go out for a night of fun, or just getting up in the morning.
A scale reveals a number, your relationship to gravity, but reveals nothing about your relationship with yourself, or others you care deeply about.
A scale is a scale. Gravity is neither kind nor unkind. Pleasant nor unpleasant. It is what it is. It does not pretend to be more. Why should you?
Thus, what you invest emotionally in the number the scale reveals is what gives it power. It is your energy that inflates a scale’s worth.
So, one Saturday morning you show up at a suburban strip mall, push open the non-descript glass doors, and head for the scales…the weekly weigh-in.
Now, your entire week is reduced to a number, a number compared to last week’s number. No matter what, up or down, everyone who weighed in that morning, who are now sitting in that room, will applaud your effort. And you dutifully, enthusiastically, applaud their numbers, up or down, in turn.
What you each have in common with others in that room is your relationship to gravity. You share that. You talk about the numbers your gravity-detector produces. But you forget they are just numbers. Numbers are not you. Not who you’ve been, nor who you are becoming.
Taking turns discussing how you moved the needle up, or down, or how it stubbornly refuses to budge…could it be that your Saturday morning group is discussing the wrong topic?
A scale, in this weigh-in setting, is not your friend.
A scale is a commercial weapon pointed against you — did you do well this week, or fall off their restricted food wagon? Time to buy more pre-packaged food, commit to the society of scale-watchers for one more month?
Whatever friendships form in that weekly ritual of revealing numbers, you need to be acutely aware of one uncontroverted fact…
Fast Weight Loss = Fast Re-Gain
And that is true for everyone in that number-fixated room. While you are sharing a tear or two, you can tell your group about your challenges, your difficulties bowing daily — weekly — to that master slavedriver — the scale.
But the scale-watching companies own the scale…not just the one on the office floor, nor its cousin on your bathroom floor. They own the scale that is in your head, and that is where it does the most damage. The more you worry about the weigh-in scale, by weighing yourself daily, the more they can sell to you.
To you, a scale measures your relationship to gravity.
To the diet company, a scale measures your relationship to their PROFITS.
Because you want to lose weight permanently, you need to break-up your relationship with the scale. It is time to completely divorce yourself from obsessing about your fluctuating relationship with gravity.
Instead, obsessively concentrate on you. Re-design your lifestyle to one that, step-by-step, makes your body healthier and more vibrant — alive with the intense sensation of living. Finding a path to inescapable joy.
Eat to be Healthy, Not Skinny.
That, only that, is how you will finally be able to get your weight to where you know it ought to be.
Are you ready to break your relationship with gravity? Are you primed to begin a new, joyful, lifelong marriage to a healthier lifestyle?
Instead of looking down to see a scale,
look up each morning to the NEW YOU
you are rapidly becoming.
Are you ready for that?
