May 9 is FEMA’s National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day. As a pet owner, we do have a check list for the sake of our furry babes and our peace of mind. I usually use this list for my kid’s small projects when it comes learning and having practical use of the information that is being shared with them at school and at home. What some people are not aware of is that some pet food companies have special programs specifically designed for and used in pet rescue and care in case of disaster.

In the emergency, Hill’s recommends the following safety tips for the pet owners.
Pet Identification
It is important that every pet in your household is microchipped or has a collar ID tag. Ensure the collar tags are sturdy and won’t be ripped off during the disaster. Ideally, a microchip would serve the purpose much more reliably. Make sure contact information is up-to-date.
Emergency Grab & Go Kit
Here’s what you should consider for the emergency kit to take with you.
First Aid supplies and guide book
3-Day supply of pet food: Use waterproof containers and bottled water
Information on your pet’s feeding routine and any behavioral issues
Medication and medical records
Contact list of veterinarian and pet care organizations
Comfort toys
Blanket
Safety harness and leash
Waste clean-up supplies
Display a PET RESCUE decal
Display it on a prominent place on your front door or window. This lets first responders know if there’s a pet in the house. Include veterinarian’s contact information as well.
Learn where your pet likes to hide
This small detail would help you evacuate faster and safely.
Identify Location for Pets
Every local area has a predetermined locations for pets, small and big, to be taken in case of a major disaster. Learn about these places and find them easily just by googling them for your local area. Have their phone numbers, addresses handy and be kept with your disaster preparedness information.
Carry a Picture of Your Pet with You
It makes it so much easier to locate your pet in case of separation during evacuation. I would even carry a few pictures for each pet, as they could be used for sharing them and posting on information boards.
Transportation for Evacuation
Small animals could be evacuated in their own pet carrier or crate. It is safer for them, as crates provide one more barrier from escape. The crates also provide a more peaceful and familiar surroundings for the pet. Put pet’s blanket and toy inside, so that the animal could feel more comfort during the transportation.

This is great to know. We usually don’t think of preparing for pets’ needs during a disaster. Glad to have this reminder.
We don’t have any pets anymore due to my increasingly bad allergies. But, I agree it’s so important to have a disater preparedness plan and include your pets in it.

Definitely all good ideas. I have some if these in place but not all–better get cracking! I know most of my cat’s hidey holes–but there are a few I have yet to discover. It is good to know that Hill’s helps animal shelters in disaster areas!
Sadly, pets are often the last thing that people think of when they put together their disaster preparedness plans. This check list is great for families with furbabies to be able to have on hand.
It’s good to be prepared I guess. I always thought if there’s a natural disaster.. I’d just wing it and instinctually just grab our two cats to safety.. but it’s good to have a plan beforehand.
This is useful information since it is tornado season in Texas. I have three fur baby’s to take with us if something happened. I’m thankful that all three of my dogs are microchiped so they can make it back home if they get lost.

This is great information for those who have pets. Being prepared is important. I would never leave my pets behind.
This is such great information for pet owners. We always have a hurricane preparedness plan for us and our kids but I have to admit I’ve never thought about our cats (other than taking them with us if we have to evacuate!)
