DIY Borax Snowflake Craft
Today has been the last day of school for the kids for the year! I always love when it’s winter break time. It’s the time I get to spend with my children (and sleep in!) and enjoy the holidays. But we have to make sure our children do not grow bored and set up in front of the TV for 2 whole weeks right? That’s why I always like to have some fin crafts and activities planned while they are home.
One of our favorite winter break activities are my DIY Borax Snowflakes! They are easy to make, a fun science experiment, and in the end you will have sparkly snowflakes to decorate your home with! Keep reading to learn how to make your own!
Here is how to make my DIY Borax Snowflakes:
You Will Need:
- Pipe Cleaners
- Water
- Borax (found in the laundry care isle)
- String
- Stick (Like a Popsicle stick)
- Cups (glass or hard plastic)
Instructions:
Step 1:
Using your pipe cleaners, mold them into snowflakes (or whatever shape you would like! Be creative!). You will want to ensure that whatever shape you make will fit inside the cups you have without touching the sides or the bottom.
Step 2:
Tie your pipe cleaner snowflakes to a string, and the string to a Popsicle stick (this is what will keep it floating in your cup).
Step 3:
In a pot, bring water to a boil (you will need 2 cups of water for every 1/2 cup of borax). Once your water is boiling, add in your borax. Mix well. Pour your mix into your cups. You will want to pour enough of your mix in to cover the entire snowflake.
Step 4:
Dip your pipecleaner shape in to your cup. Make sure it doesn’t touch the sides or the bottom. Now it’s time to wait for the magic to happen. Leave them in the cup overnight (or for about 10 hours) and then check them out.
Step 5:
Pull your DIY Borax Snowflake Craft out of the water and you should have before you a sparkling crystal snowflake! Simply pat dry with a papertowel and display however you would like.
I hope you enjoyed this DIY Borax Snowflake Craft and have a great winter holiday!

We made a ton of them when we were kids but I forgot all about these! The kids are home for the next two weeks so this would be great for the kids to do!
These are adorable and always so fun to make. I haven’t done them in a while, so thanks for sharing the recipe so we can do these this week!
When my daughter was little she used to craft with pipe cleaners all the time. But I have never seen this craft, I love it, so original!
Your borax snowflakes are so pretty! It’s the perfect craft activity for the holidays and it’s probably the closest I’ll get to snow. 🙂
