Tampons, pantiliners, pads, carton tip, plastic tip. You could contribute to this logical stream of nouns easily. But what about a menstrual cup or menstrual disc? Have you heard about these innovations, sort of?

In today’s daily rhythm of life, any woman would appreciate convenience, effectiveness and innovation in lifestyle products. Many products have been created, but only few truly come close to cause a true revolution in how we feel when using such products.

Tampons vs Feminine Protection Cups

Tampons have been around since the 1930s and have not evolved much since (aside from some fancy packaging). But today’s modern woman has a lot more on her plate than did her 1936 counterpart.

Many of us work or go to school full-time (or both), we travel, and some of us have families to care for. We don’t always have time to worry about changing our protection every few hours.

Furthermore, we’re becoming more educated about our choices as consumers. We’re considering how the products we use impact our environment and our health.

The fact is a woman uses an average of 20 tampons during each period, not to mention pads and pantyliners. That’s a lot of cotton, cardboard, plastic applicators and wrappers going into the trash each month. In addition, concerns about Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), tampon ingredients, and most recently moldy tampons (yikes!), weigh heavily on our minds.

On the bright side, these days we have options. There are safe, convenient, and “green” menstrual products out there. Plus many of us are beginning to realize that the protection our mothers gave us so many years ago is not necessarily what’s right for our lifestyles now.

The product that’s changing the way I view my period is Softcup. Soft cup is a flexible cup that’s worn internally to collect, rather than absorb, your menstrual flow.

What is a Softdisc?

Softdisc is a menstrual cup that can be worn for the period of 12 hours. It collects menstrual fluids, rather than absorbing them like with a tampon.

Softdisc is comfortable. I can’t feel it when I’m wearing it, and it’s safe to wear for up to 12 hours, with no link to TSS. The materials used to make Softdisc are non-toxic and non-irritating and have been used in the medical industry for decades. Last, but certainly not least, a Softdisc can be worn during intercourse, so I can have mess-free sex during my period. That’s a benefit I haven’t found with any other period product.

Softdisc’s long wear time allows me to use fewer cups (sometimes just two a day), which means less waste and less environmental impact. There’s even a reusable version that allows me to reuse one cup for an entire period. And at a cost of around a dollar per cup, that’s a lot of savings too.

It’s not just about getting me through that time of the month. Softdisc empowers me to live my life as if I weren’t on my period. I no longer have to interrupt meetings or wake up during the night to change my feminine protection. I travel lighter because I don’t have to bring a suitcase full of tampons. And my love life is not compromised each month.

It just seems silly that most women are still using a product – tampon – that hasn’t improved in over 60 years. Any woman can wear Softdisc. Don’t you think it’s time for a change?
