Interviewing one of the best Disney writers and editors Silvia Olivas has been one of my special highlights this year. You already know that the newest Disney princess Elena of Avalor is the first one from the Hispanic background. To partake from the culture that is rich in expression, emotional compassion and beauty is one of the advantages that our today’s girls have living and growing up in the multi-cultural environment.
Elena Of Avalor: Ready To Rule DVD
Silvia Olivas is one of the best to portray and write the top princess series in a Disney setting. Here are some questions I was curious to ask Silvia Olivas during the interview. Just to get you the feel and a very positive energy stream coming from this incredible woman, I would like to say this: Silvia Olivas is a woman who has already made history with her Elena of Avalor. She is an incredible genius to blend the cultural strengths into the society of other princesses and bring out the best to empower both girls and boys as they watch Disney movies.
ELENA OF AVALOR – Disney Channel and Amigos for Kids hosted a screening of the highly-anticipated animated TV series “Elena of Avalor,” introducing Disney’s first princess inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore, at Miami’s Regal South Beach Theatre on July 13. Actress Elizabeth Gutierrez co-hosted the event. The series premieres FRIDAY, JULY 22 (7:00 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney Channel.

What was your influence in creating the Elena of Avalor series: both in editorial and character influence?
I took a lead in directing the creative staff on the fashion Elena of Avalor should be wearing, her walk, her posture and movements. It was an amazing process to add new characters like Elena’s grandparents. In fact my grandparents served as prototypes to this new princess’ grandparents.
When I was at Disney recently and watched the attractions with Elena of Avalor, the words, the messaging that comes out of the mouth of this character was so strongly resonating with me that I was thinking about my grandparents. It was a surreal experience, I tell you.
In fact, my grandpa was a very traditional guy who loved his wife, my grandmother, brought her flowers and played the guitar to her to please with his songs and mood. In the series, we have the grandparents who are a guiding element and a very important part of Elena’s life.
What was your guiding principles when creating a character of Elena of Avalor?
My top priority was to develop a character that would be of Leadership Role. The ways she learns and builds on the knowledge and experience, the way she treats others and her own self when in a difficult position – these are the teaching moments that cannot happen without being a Leader in life. Elena of Avalor is a strong example of such leader.
She exudes a beautifully convincing energy to which anybody around listens and respects. She is a powerful example of how to lead and be successful to both boys and girls.
What would be your Holiday message to all of the Celebrate Woman Today Audience?
This Holiday, be around your family, – Familia, – honor them and thank them for the year that has almost become history. Time to Celebrate is always now, in the moment we live.
