During my trip to the Red Carpet event of CHRISTOPHER ROBIN, I spent a few days in Los Angeles meeting with the directors, animators, story writers who brought to us many of the Disney’s favorites. This time it was Wreck It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet.
We had a sit-down meeting with the original team who masterminded Wreck It Ralph: Director Rich Moore, Writer Phil Johnston, and Producer Clark Spencer. What an incredible emotional high to experience first-hand what their thought process is behind this Disney animation, what difficulties and triumphs they’ve encountered during the creation of the movie, and what new breakthroughs they’ve managed to achieve as a team.

Before I begin to indulge into the amazing introduction of the Wreck It Ralph 2, let me say this. This new Disney animation is truly magical. The second installment of Ralph and Vanellope touches upon social issues, the power of the online research and the dangers of the dark places on the Internet. This movie is educational without being naggy or conforming. It is a truly FAMILY movie experience!
The entire family will find new things they’ve never known before. Ralph and Vanellope and their truly magical, yet so-real discoveries of the online world will shake up your beliefs about many things online.

And Mark Calendars for a Movie Date!
You need to get a good reason to make a sequel for any movie. Writer Phil Johnson and Director Rich Moore saw a good opportunity for exploring different conflicts among characters and environments they could function in and explore. They also wanted to revisit the old characters and include some exciting new characters. One of the new characters goes under the name Yesss, played by the talented Taraji P. Henson.
Yess is an algorithm in the place called BuzzTube and is a heart-and-soul of the Internet world where Ralph and his friend Vanellope will find themselves totally, first, confused and scared, then empowered and excited about. Watch out for Yesss, as she will be a very important piece of the puzzle during Ralph and Vanellope’s total online emersion, so to say.
I was amazed to see how cool this character is and how good she is with rationalizing – well, she’s an algorithm! But from a human perspective, she has volumes of wisdom and tips to share with anybody who listens! You will absolutely adore this up-to-date with trends persona! Yess has absolute ability to shift the look of her hair based on what is trending in our real world. Her clothes will change from scene to scene. There was a lot of clothes designs here. I am excited to see them all!
Because the digital world projection in this movie is made of millions of fiber optics, Yesss reflects it in her blue skin tan. And she might claim the title of the COOLEST DISNEY’S CHARACTERS EVER! I am genuinely looking forward to watch this movie in its entirety and truly appreciate the art of making and developing Yesss.
How Was the Internet World in Wreck It Ralph 2 Designed?
When it comes to the ideas of designing the Internet world in Wreck It Ralph 2, the creative team looked at several approaches.
The first question was HOW DO WE PORTRAY THE INTERNET YOU AND I KNOW IN REAL HUMAN LIFE IN THE ANIMATION WORLD SO IT RESONATES WITH PEOPLE?
The Internet concept was not that easy to come up with. However what makes Disney the best in the world in what they do is their RESEARCH PROCESS! As you may know each and every movie, before it even goes into detailed development has a thorough preparation. Teams of animators, writers, creative talent – all begin their immersion into the real-life environment that come close with what the story is about.
For example, the ZOOTOPIA team went to African Safari to explore the real life of animals, their behavior, moves, color pallets of their fur. The team from CARS 3, spent days with the masters of Sonoma Raceway and learned the history of car racing. There was nothing different for the Wreck It Ralph 2. The team took a trip to the 1 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles. This One Wilshire building houses ALL the connections, any and all Internet communications for all of the North America! Yes, indeed!
The building is a unique in itself that has miles and miles of wires and servers that connect the world. This is the hub that connects the West coast of America to the Internet. This research trip inspired the Disney team creators of the Wreck It Ralph 2 to start building their views and concepts of the Internet and what it could look like in the animation world. The Internet Metropolis is made of many districts and is operated by NetUsers, like you and I, and Netizens, the all-time Internet citizens who help us all the time.

What Is Behind the Story in New Wreck It Ralph 2?
The game Sugar Rush where Vanellope is a racing character breaks one day. As the owner of the arcade does not have money to repair the game, the kids of the arcade who love playing the game get their phones out and find that replacement steering wheel on the Internet that is needed to repair the game. eBay is the place where the steering wheel is sold! Unfortunately, the cost of the replacement part is high, more than Sugar Rush makes in the entire year! The owner of the arcade has no choice, but to unplug the game and sell it for parts.
Vanellope is now homeless, as she does not have her game. What’s to do? Where to go for her? Ralph, being a huge fan and best friend of Vanellope’s, will find that funny-sound place eBay and get that steering wheel to save the game and for Vanellope to return back into her racing world of Candy Crush. Everything will be back to normal. That’s what friends would do for each other!

Real Life eBay Auctioneer Brian Curless Makes His Appearance
in Ralph Breaks the Internet Scene
One of the best parts of Disney is that they attract the biggest talents in the world! That is why when Disney tells a story, it is sure has a well-researched background. For Wreck It Ralph 2, Disney team has invited the reigning World Champion Auctioneer Brian Curless to consult them on the bidding process. Why? Because one of the ideas for the Ralph Breaks the Internet was to include the scene of bidding on an auction for Vanellope’s steering wheel needed for the game. Brian gave a sample of his talent bidding on a velvet painting of a sorrowful kitten. It was hilarious watching it!
You are up for an amazingly entertaining scene and the understanding of how-eBay-works as per Vanellope!
All you have to do is yell out the biggest number and then you win this stuff?! – Vanellope’s take on how to win an eBay auction.
Without divulging the entire scene, that’s when Yesss character, the Head Algorithm of the website BuzzTube, enters the lives of Ralph and Vanellope. Yesss helps them to brainstorm the ideas of how the money could be made in order to be able to pay for the steering wheel won at the auction. One of the ideas is a creating a “viral video!”
Ralph is on his mission to create a viral video to get the wheel and allow Vanellope to return to her Sugar Crush game before it is too late.
Ralph’s Discovery of the Dark Places on the Internet
The writers for this script felt the responsibility to portray not only how Internet is great, but also to talk about those things that are complicated. The bulling is one of the issues that is dealt within this amazing Disney animation. There are ways to deal with it, and Ralph needs to learn these HOW-TOs. In the world of Internet, negative and positive live side-by-side.
There’s no avoiding all the dark places on the Internet. Knowing the signs of them and using effective tools, we all can learn to embrace the most positive of the online world.

Oh My, Disney Princesses In One Place!
One of the brilliant episodes you’ll be treated to is a scene with ALL of the Disney Princesses being present. Yes, Vanellope will b among this royal crowd with her own attitude, remarks and take-away lessons. I will write a separate post on this one a bit later, closer to the release date.

Mark your calendars for that “RALPH 2” date to take your entire family to the movies to celebrate a truly amazing world of Ralph and Vanellope which is of friendship, of learning, and of overcoming difficulties together.
