Menopausal skin undergoes a series of changes that can be both frustrating and challenging for women. However when you are aware of the causes that produce unwanted changes in your skin, you can take control of the process of beautifying your skin. Read one of the posts that explores in details some of the most significant Aging Skin Indicators and gives you a path of dealing with them.
Dryness is a prevalent issue during this phase, as the decline in estrogen levels leads to reduced oil production, causing the skin to become parched and prone to flakiness.
Loss of elasticity is another common concern, marked by a decrease in collagen and elastin production. This results in sagging and the formation of fine lines and wrinkles, contributing to an overall loss of skin firmness.
Increased sensitivity is a notable shift that many women experience, making the skin more reactive to environmental factors and skincare products.
By now you know that hormonal fluctuations, particularly the decline in estrogen, play a pivotal role in these changes. Menopause symptoms are different for every women. To address these symptoms from the point of view of “educated approach” is the key to a beautiful, happy you.
Estrogen is crucial for maintaining skin hydration, collagen production, and overall skin health.
As its levels decline during menopause, the skin’s natural protective barrier weakens, making it more susceptible to dryness, aging, and sensitivity. Understanding these menopausal skin issues is the first step towards developing an effective and targeted skincare routine to address these concerns.

Building a Detoxifying Skincare Routine in Menopause
As an esthetician, I emphasize to my clients again and again that establishing a gentle, yet effective cleansing routine is the top key in the journey to a more refined and beautiful skin.
During menopause, the skin may become more susceptible to environmental pollutants and impurities, emphasizing the need for a diligent morning and night cleansing routine. Cleansing in the morning helps remove sweat, excess oils, and any residue from nighttime skincare products. Evening cleansing is essential for getting rid of makeup, pollutants, and accumulated impurities from the day.
This dual cleansing approach not only ensures a clean canvas for subsequent skincare steps but also aids in preventing clogged pores and potential breakouts. Consistency in cleansing is a simple yet effective practice that supports the overall detoxification and health of menopausal skin.
Personally, I do a double cleansing or oil cleansing during my PM skin routine. Applying a gentle lymphatic facial massage adds to the effectiveness of the blood flow within the skin. Where there’s blood flow, there’s healing, regeneration, boosted immunity.
Importance of Exfoliation During Menopause
Exfoliation plays a pivotal role in promoting a radiant and revitalized complexion, especially for women navigating through menopause. The process involves the removal of dead skin cells from the surface, facilitating a more efficient cell turnover rate. Without doubt, skin exfoliation acts as a mechanical way to detoxify skin’s surface, by lowering the number of pathogens and their ability to penetrate the skin through tiny cuts and openings.
During menopause, hormonal changes can slow down a cellular turnover, a natural renewal process, leading to dull, uneven skin tone. Regular exfoliation helps to counteract this outcome by encouraging the shedding of dead cells, unveiling fresher, more youthful skin beneath.
Additionally, exfoliation aids in unclogging pores, preventing the buildup of sebum, debris, and environmental impurities that can contribute to acne and blemishes. By eliminating these obstacles, exfoliation promotes a smoother skin texture and enhances the absorption of subsequent skincare products, allowing them to penetrate more effectively.
As part of a comprehensive skincare routine during menopause, incorporating exfoliation not only addresses specific skin concerns but also contributes to a healthier, more vibrant complexion.
Purifi is a cleansing blend with a detoxifying effect. This product focuses on increasing nutrient absorption in the body, while supporting the body’s elimination organs to remove toxins. As far as the skin goes, detoxification of the body reflects on the skin’s health as well.
Effective Products for Skin Exfoliation
Normal skin, dry skin, oily skin, and sensitive skin can all reap magnificent benefits from the best brightening cleansers available in today’s skincare market.
Some of the best ingredients for dead cell exfoliation are Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA), Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA), Lipo-Hydroxy Acid (LHA). Using cleansers containing these acids has a powerful exfoliating effect.
Keeping up with the findings in the area of skin health, I find that a Polyhydroxy Acid (PHA) suites very well for the menopause skin. This acid is related to AHA, yet it has some benefits that make me recommend it to my clients with different skin issues.
Polyhydroxy Acid Features:
- Large molecules, work on the surface, hence do not irritate the skin by deeper penetration.
- Skin plumping ability due to molecular affinity to bind with water, hence more superior skin hydration.
- Carry antioxidant properties, protect against UV and free radical damage, hence prevent premature aging aka oxidative stress.
- Do not cause Photo-sensitivity, i.e., do not make skin sensitive to sun burn.

Skin Hydration to Support Skin Detoxification
Skin hydration plays a crucial role in supporting the detoxification process, especially during menopause when hormonal changes can compromise the skin’s natural moisture balance. Adequate hydration helps maintain the skin’s integrity by strengthening its protective barrier, preventing the penetration of harmful environmental toxins and pollutants.
Besides, well-hydrated skin is better equipped to flush out impurities through sweat and sebum production.
Additionally, a hydrated complexion facilitates efficient cell turnover, aiding in the elimination of dead skin cells and promoting a more rejuvenated appearance.
By now you know that proper skin hydration is foundational for optimal organ function. As the body’s largest organ, the skin benefits significantly from internal and external hydration, contributing to its overall detoxification and health during the transformative phase of menopause.
Products to Support Skin Hydration
Some of the potent and effective skin care products to support your skin’s hydration contain Hyaluronic Acid (HA), Ceramides, Niacinamide and different herbs. The combination of these ingredients could be in different proportions and used in various skincare categories: cleansers, toners, serums, creams and lotions.
Fun Fact: Hyaluronic Acid binds to water on one side and collagen on the other. This way water is trapped inside the skin, providing firmness, fullness and smoothness.
Hyaluronic Acid is actually manufactured within our bodies. However to maintain its reserves as we become older, it is advisable to use skin care products and supplementation. HA supports collagen production and plays a crucial role in skin’s turgor or firmness. To avoid deep wrinkles, underage bags, dark patches and fine lines, products with Hyaluronic Acid could really come to your rescue!

– Eminence Organic Skin Care Strawberry Rhubarb Hyaluronic Serum, shop for it
– Farmacy Filling Good, Hyaluronic Acid Plumping Serum, shop
Fun Fact: Natural component of the top layer of our skin, CERAMIDES are fats that act like mortar to the bricks (cells) that form a wall to keep water inside the skin.
Keep in mind that ceramide levels drop during the Winter time and as we age. However, we can replenish them using skin care products that contain ceramides. Such products are an excellent way to provide extra layer of moisturization and defense the skin from extra stress.

Nutritional Support for Skin Detoxification
Maintaining a balanced diet is paramount for supporting skin health during menopause, as nutritional choices profoundly impact the skin’s resilience and appearance.
The decline in estrogen levels during menopause can lead to reduced collagen production and diminished skin elasticity. A diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals helps combat oxidative stress, neutralizing free radicals and supporting collagen synthesis.
Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts contribute to skin hydration and suppleness, mitigating the dryness often associated with menopausal skin.
Additionally, foods containing vitamin A, vitamin C, and E, such as leafy greens, citrus fruits, and nuts, promote skin regeneration and protection.
In addition, adequate hydration through water and water-rich foods is equally essential for maintaining skin elasticity and promoting detoxification. A balanced diet, tailored to address the specific needs of menopausal skin, becomes an integral part of a holistic approach to skincare during this transformative life stage.
Role of Supplements In Skin Detoxification During Menopause
Supplements can play a supportive role in detoxifying the skin during menopause by addressing specific nutritional needs that may be challenging to meet through diet alone.
Omega-3 fatty acid supplements, such as fish oil or flaxseed oil capsules, provide essential fats that contribute to skin hydration and help combat dryness, a common issue during menopause.
Collagen supplements can be beneficial for supporting the skin’s elasticity and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles associated with decreased collagen production. Check Collagene supplement HERE.
Antioxidant supplements, including vitamins A, C, and E, as well as selenium and zinc, can help neutralize free radicals, promoting a healthier complexion and aiding in the detoxification process. Check my detailed post on Vitalite.
Vitamin D supplements may be necessary, especially if sunlight exposure is limited, as this vitamin is crucial for skin health and overall well-being.
Probiotics, either through supplements or fermented foods, can support gut health, positively influencing the skin’s appearance by promoting a balanced microbiome.
However, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating supplements into the routine during menopause. We are all different, and our needs vary as well. Integrating supplements into a well-rounded approach, alongside a balanced diet and proper skincare, can contribute to supporting skin detoxification and overall health during the menopausal transition.

I have recently started a skincare routine. I wash my face in the morning and evening and follow with a toner. In the evening, I use an oil on my face and something around my eyes. I consider my face normal as I don’t get flakiness or oiliness and haven’t since post menopause! However, my face does not break out with the use of oil at night, so I assume my face is thirsty! Who knew?! In the morning, I follow with a moisturizer that contains SPF/
