Though the seasons are on the verge to change, and weather may present its capricious side like rains, there’s no reason to give up on your self-care and well-being! In fact, for many women Fall could be one of the best ways to get in shape and revisit skin concerns that often arise from entering the menopause.
Hence I am a huge advocate of brisk walking every day. No matter how tired or busy I can become, I put on my walking shoes and off I go for a brisk, relaxing walk.

Benefits of Brisk Walking for Menopause Skin
Though walking is one of the best exercises to destress, lower our mental load, and improve mood, skin gains a ton of health benefits from walking as well. And it becomes especially critical during menopause.
As the change in hormonal balance within the woman’s body during menopause is constantly fluctuating, hot flashes, quick mood swings and even depression are the occurences we cannot ignore.[2] That is why cardiovascular exercise like brisk walking should be our priority to take advantage of its therapeutic value for menopause brain health and emotional well-being.[1]
For you, walking could become an affordable way to get into a menopause self-care mode. And your skin would thank you, too.
Here are some of the outcomes brisk walking produces for your skin.
– Improved skin tone – blood circulation brings more oxygen to the skin cells and enriches them with oxygen molecules. Hemoglobin helps the oxygen to spread out, which makes the skin appear in its awesome pink color. Remember, where there’s warmth, there’s blood flow. And blood is the number one remedy for your skin. Oxygenated blood is rich in nutrition every skin cell requires to function properly.
– Reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles – brisk walking exercise stimulates the production of collagen and elastin within the body and the skin layers. Any woman in menopause needs extra reserves of these “magical” proteins to provide an extra support for a thinned-out skin.
– Decrease in puffiness and inflammation – with the increased blood flow your lymphatic system begins to function more effectively as well. A more active lymph removes waste, toxins and extra fluid from the body. As a result, a fan of brisk walking will celebrate the skin that glows and enjoys a more toned, rejuvenated appearance.
Practical Tip on Face Washing After Walking
When you briskly walk or work out at the gym, your skin perspires. And the face can be generously covered with sweat and all the by-products and salts that are released during your power walk! Sweating is great. It is healthy and beneficial for your all bodily functions, skin’s well-being included.
As a licensed medical esthetician and from my personal experience, I would recommend to use lukewarm to slightly cool water to wash off the sweat from your face right after a physical activity.
The reason is simple. When you use water to rinse off the sweaty by-products from the face, you block their ability to dry and merge with your upper skin layer, forming an additional crust on top of the dead skin layer. If you do not wash the sweaty residue off your face asap after a brisk walk or workout at the gym, and if you do not exfoliate regularly, your skin may experience a hard time to rejuvenate and give you a healthy glow. Besides, you will be wasting your skincare products over the less reactive skin surface.
Washing off sweat residue will allow you to rid of bacteria and skin’s by-products. And such a good face washing practice would allow you to prevent unnecessary skin breakouts, pesky rashes, milia (white bumps). More to that, you will enjoy inflammation-free skin.
Other Skin Benefits from Brisk Walking
It is a no joke when you experience acne breakout during your menopause. Cardiovascular activities like a brisk walking reduce stress and regular blood sugar within your body. It all contributes to a better hormonal balance. As a result, your acne can become history.
As with any new activity, please do check with your trusted medical specialist.
Also keep in mind that when you engage in a more vigorous cardio activity, i.e., during your walking
Your Skin Health Depends on Good Posture
Many of you would ask me a question of how a good posture and skin health intertwine. It is very simple indeed.
With a slight change in your posture, you trigger a change in the entire musculature of your neck and face. And with that, it is often a tension and a compensation of some sort within the facial features and the tension of the neck area.
Moreover, if you do nothing to change a posture and relax the entire body, from head to toes, a constant stress within muscles can easily become a chronic pain. And if we speak about the facial features, a wrong posture will trigger the weakening of the skin layers.
In fact, such skin weakening becomes a direct effect of overusing of one group of muscles and underutilizing other muscle groups. For example, second chin is one of the bad posture outcomes. The chin and neck muscles weaken, while creating a gap in supporting the skin tone over them.
Hence when you walk, you body calls for an optimal and appropriate shoes. Sneakers for good posture are an excellent way to support your body and SKIN Health and Beauty in an affordable way.
I would recommend to read my detailed post on shoes good for your posture. There, I discuss how to support your beautiful skin by choosing the right pair of walking shoes, thus to avoid some serious physical conditions like plantar fasciitis, back pain, headache, foot pain of any sorts.
Importance of Stability During Walking
Now that you are aware of a fact that good walking shoes are a prerequisite for your beautiful posture, hence healthy skin, you need to shop for shoes to support the entire core.
During walking, your body creates a tremendous pressure on your feet. The stress on participating during the walking muscles, bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons and joints, connective tissue (fascia) is huge! Every element is responsible to be a reliable team member to keep your body straight up.
With that in mind, if you did not pay attention to your posture and shoe quality in your twenties and thirties, now is the time to do so. Stability of your body core will reflect on the health and beauty of your facial skin as well.
