7 Simple Slimming Secrets To Lose Body Fat
Simple Slimming Secret #6: Don’t Eat Within 2-3 Hours Before Going To Bed
By Amy Fournier
This is a good rule of thumb for anyone – not just those of us who are trying to lose or watch our weight.
During sleep, the body goes into rest, repair and restore mode. Think of sleep as the ultimate Anti-Aging Program! During sleep your body uses its energy to regenerate your internal organs.
So if you eat a meal too close to bedtime, your body cannot perform this important function because it is using that energy to digest your food instead of repairing itself.
In addition, by eating late at night, you won’t have a chance to burn off any extra calories you might consume, therefore increasing the probability that these calories will go into fat storage.

Jenn,
Staying up late is not good either for the blood sugar control issues. But when we do, herbal, lemon teas are great to fill us up. Of course we are not perfect all the time. Just make sure that those snacks when they do happen are slow sugars that won’t spike your blood sugar out of range, especially at night.
This is such a hard tip for me to follow in particular. I often stay up until 1 in the morning after eating dinner around 6 or 6:30. I tend to have “fourth meal” as a series of light snacks after that. 🙂 On the other hand, I do track my calories to make sure I’m not overeating overall.
What great tips. I keep gum next to my bed, that way when I am up blogging and watching tv, I grab it instead of a late night snack.
So true! I am good about this in general, but while I am pregnant I nibble on a healthy, light snack before bed otherwise I wake feeling sick.
I know this and yet I still do it!! Time to try again!
Thanks for the tip. I am guilty for eating right before bed:(
Great tip! My problem is that I spend so much time running all day with my kids that I forget to eat… then I eat at dinner time and am hungry before bed too… something I definitely need to work on though!
Heather,
It is understandable.
However, you do need to Prioritize Your needs as well, like eating while you are taking care of your family and kids. Unfortunately, only you can do it. And I could support you in your steps. Let me know, and I’ll create reminders for you!
How many hours would you advise waiting before going to sleep?
Patty,
If you meant how many hours to eat before going to bed, then usually it’s at least 2 hours. Allow your food to digest partially and move on into intestinal tract. Lighten the burden for your digestive system, as it too, needs some rest during the night when all regeneration processes take place.
Eating late is my worst offense 🙁 It happens all too often. I’m bookmarking the Slimming Secrets pages so I can refer to them later. Thanks for sharing!
Gia,
I would love to support you in your quest to change this late-night eating.
Let me know, and I could remind you in a fun and supportive way that it’s time for bed, rather than dinner. lol
I’m telling people this all the time! It’s great to have an article to direct them to now! Thanks,
Wow, great tip!
This is such an important tip to remember. I used to be a huge night time eater and snacker and stopped about 2 months ago. I lost 15 pounds so far!
Jessica,
It does take a small step, a consistent step, to see such mesmerizing results!
I always try to have dinner ready by 6:30 for this exact reason. I find it weird that some people eat very late (say 8pm, like my mother in law).
Oh, I try so hard to follow this rule…. but those darn chocolate bars always seem to yell my name right before I head to bed! 😛
Leah,
Try to do either of these steps:
• Get rid of all junk food not to bother your eyes!
• Allow yourself to eat those bars during the day. It’s OK to have a snack when you want some!
This is a great tip! Thank you for sharing this info 🙂
