Car Seat Riding Tips

1. Rear-facing till at least age 2 but extended rear-facing is highly recommended and i personally have done it till 3.5 for my first and hope to get that far with my 2nd.
2. The chest clip should be at the chest. Having it anywhere else could cause your child harm or even death in the case of an accident. Along with the chest clip its important to make sure the straps are at the proper levels and tightened.
3. Follow your child’s height and weight to be sure they are in the proper seats. We have quite a ways to go with both children in a 5 pt harness and Recaro allows you to extended rear-face and even use a 5 pt harness much longer than most seats.
4. Is your child ready for a booster? Generally, kids will need a booster until they are 4’9? tall, which happens around age 11 for most kids. To ride without a booster, a child needs to be able to pass the 5 step test:

• Sits all the way back against the vehicle seat.
• Knees bent at the edge of the vehicle seat and feet on the floor.
• Shoulder belt fits evenly across the collarbone and sits flush with the torso.
• Lap belt is low on the hips, touching the tops of the thighs.
• Can stay comfortably seated this way the entire ride including if they fall asleep.

5. Something many parent’s do not know is that the aftermarket items you can buy in certain stores should not be used with any car seat. You should only use what comes with the car seat and what the manufacturer approves. Otherwise you could compromise the safety of the seat.
