PIXAR Studios is a dream place to visit and one of the most self-fulfilling experiences if you work there. This Spring, we had an incredible opportunity to live and work and tour the PIXAR Studios, meet with different teams – from Marketing to Animation – and learn about the nitty-gritty of the making of the upcoming Pixar Animation CARS 3.
One of the spotlights during the visit was meeting and learning about PIXAR IN A BOX, a partnership and collaboration between PIXAR Studios and KHAN ACADEMY, FREE online resource for children of any age to learn and get fascinated with math, reading, and think process. And now, thanks to this Disney-sponsored partnership, PIXAR has created and has been curating one of the most exciting resources available at KHAN ACADEMY – PIXAR IN A BOX.
KHAN ACADEMY has a very neat system to present things in a very friendly, and easy way to learn from. Children who struggle in learning math, for example, pick up math-solving skills in no time. In addition, parents have their own login to monitor and get excited about the progress their kids make while learning with KHAN ACADEMY teaching blocks.
That is why PIXAR chose the KHAN ACADEMY’s platform to create the learning segments about different sides of animation and creating a movie. The videos with real PIXAR employees from all departments and personalities are the key in creating a learning resource that connects the dots of the subjects like MATH, GEOMETRY, WRITING, ART into a masterful course. Every learning block is done with a great PIXAR “nerve” – humor and creativity. Things are divided into tiny steps to make learning easy and fun and powerful.
Elyse Klaidman, Director of Exhibitions and Educational Partnerships, and Tony DeRose, a Senior Scientist and lead of the Research Group at Pixar Animation Studios, lead the effort for PIXAR IN A BOX. During our meeting with them, they demonstrated how the animated and videoed segments connect different School Subjects with the real-life subjects, like making a movie.
BING BONG, the animated character from PIXAR’s Inside-Out, was, too, created by techniques used and presented in carefully crafted learning blocks that can be found at KHAN ACADEMY.
PIXAR IN A BOX makes it easy to visualize and see it in action right away, how different animation effects can be created when we know what an axis means, how to connect different patterns, when to use multiplication or subtraction, or when to write things up explaining what is going to happen. Using different skills learned at school while mastering different subjects, allows a child to truly bring it home and understand in a very tangible way How Studying is Related To Real Life.
PIXAR is very good at what they do. In reality, they are the BEST in what they do. Sharing their methodology of success, i.e., HOW-TO steps towards excellence in storytelling and animation, is one of the greatest gifts that we could give to our children.
And an interesting part of this is that these learning resources are FREE!!! I stay away from multiple exclamation marks. In PIXAR IN THE BOX case, they are truly appropriate and action-driven – please take your child to KHAN ACADEMY and get her or him on the path of a powerful learning! I’ve been doing it with my children for two years now, and we are blessed beyond any boundaries when it comes to seeing and living through success our kids celebrate.

I’m definitely familiar with Pixar but was not familiar with Khan Academy. Interesting approach to learning, certainly one that may spark creative minds.
What a thrilling experience to be able to tour the Pixar Headquarters. I would love to see it for myself too. I’m checking Khan Academy out too. My grandchildren would probably enjoy learning through it.
I have actually been looking into Khan academy! My kids love anything Pixar and so now I want to look into it even more!
How cool you got to tour the headquarters, and what a great resource! We use Khan Academy for homework help all the time!
That must be so nice to visit the Pixar headquarters. Glad you shared it here, we got to kind of see it too.
You are so lucky you got to visit the Pixar headquarters. Cars 3 is going to be amazing!
That is a wonderful collaboration to reach kids. I think if they’d had it ten years ago, my child would do well in math now. I love Pixar…I’d love to tour the studio.
Cars 3 is on the top of our movie list. We’ve really been waiting patiently to see it. I love free learning resources for the grandkids so I’ll have to check this out.
I will have to read more about Khan Academy. It looks like something I would like to take advantage of for my children! Thanks for letting me know.
I cant wait to see Cars 3 with my son, he loves the Car’s movies! Pixar is amazing and so talented at what they do.
What a great resource for them to be offering I have to admit I haven’t heard of it before but will definitely be looking more into the learning resources offered.
This is awesome! I have used Khan Academy in the past to try to understand some of my sons Geometry! I love that they are partnering with Pixar.
Oh wow, this academy sounds fabulous! I need to check this out. I’m a fan of anything Pixar related. We cannot wait to see Cars 3.
What an awesome experience! We would have loved that.
I took my kids to the Boston Cars 3 tour event. We had such a blast. My son’s fifth birthday is a few days before June 16th, so we already have a Cars 3 movie birthday party booked with our local movie theater!
The grandkids are looking forward to Cars 3. We have watched and they own the first two movies. It will be all about the cars and trucks once again.
We’re already a huge fan of Pixar in our household so the fact that they’re taking initiative in creating a learning resource for kids. That’s a double thumbs up from us!
I love finding new ways to help the kids learn. I am going to try this out – it sounds awesome.
I’ve never heard of Khan Academy or the free learning resources. I think it’s awesome. My grandkids can hardly wait to see Cars 3, especially the 5-year-old. He loves all things related to the Cars movies.
