Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers. About 1 in 8 (12%) women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime.
The American Cancer Society’s estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2014 are:
- About 232,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women
- About 62,570 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer)
- About 40,000 women will die from breast cancer
After increasing for more than 2 decades, female breast cancer incidence rates began decreasing in 2000, then dropped by about 7% from 2002 to 2003. This large decrease was thought to be due to the decline in use of hormone therapy after menopause that occurred after the results of the Women’s Health Initiative were published in 2002. This study linked the use of hormone therapy to an increased risk of breast cancer and heart diseases. Incidence rates have been stable in recent years.
Don’t be a statistic! The American Cancer Society encourages women to make healthy lifestyle choices such as eating a healthy diet, getting regular physical activity, and reducing alcohol, if a woman drinks. These choices can help reduce their breast cancer risk. The American Cancer Society also encourages regular breast exams and mammograms to find breast cancer early, when it is most likely to be curable. I do it on the 15th of the month — like paying taxes!
I do it on the first of the month
I do them on the first of the month.
I do them at the beginning of every month.
I have made it the first of each month so it’s been easy to remember. I have 5 children and a wonderful husband to live for so I have made this a priority to check. 🙂
Have it i n my phone
By my time of the month since it is pretty regular!
I do them every morning when i shower
Self exams are SO important! My 59 year old sister found a lump in her breast last December. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and just had a double mastectomy in August after months of chemo. It is vital to follow through with self exams and mammograms. We have no family history of breast cancer. My sister was extremely fortunate, and if she hadn’t been doing self exams this could have been worse than it was.
I sometimes forget but try to do it each time I start a new pill pack.
I do them when I get out of the shower.
I remember around the time I would be starting my menstrual cycle. I don’t have periods but still have some symptoms..
Have a niece & sister-in-law who both went through breast cancer, surgery & chemo in the last year!
I am a breast cancer survivor (as well as a colon cancer survivor). So I am diligent about checking my breasts regularly. No reminders needed!
