I think every woman who is looking after her personal health needs to be acquainted with the topic of toxic and non-toxic skincare ingredients.
In fact, some of the ingredients used in skincare products have been linked to different types of cancer. Having Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, it is a good time to boost our personal knowledge on what is what in that bottle or jar of lotion or cream we apply daily on our skin.
Cosmetics is a huge part of any woman’s daily life. We love our skin products. We adore and enjoy make-up routine. We are eagerly buying the products that smell great and feel smooth on our skin. Yet behind all those pleasant aromas and silky skin sensations, there may be chemicals which are called hormone disruptors. They can effect estrogen and other hormones within the woman’s body to play their authentic roles. Instead, these toxic chemicals begin a mimicking game, a presence that tricks the body to believe that they are the real hormones.
As a result, the hormonal balance within the body gets off track. Each woman needs to know her non-toxic, as well toxic ingredients companies use in the beauty and skin care products.
Is the Beauty Industry Not Regulated?
As cosmetics industry is growing every year (estimated $48 billion annual revenue as of 2023), the competition gets tougher. To yield better profit margins, many companies choose to go the rout of cheaper ingredients.
“Despite a booming US cosmetics industry, the US government has had virtually no legal authority to control the health and safety of cosmetics products or ingredients on the consumer market.” – IBIS World, Jan. 2023
You probably have noticed a trend of clean cosmetics, green skin care products, and a desire of using effective non-toxic ingredients for better skin care results. Many companies are doing an incredibly amazing job by offering the women high quality skin care products to develop an effective skin care routine.
But some go a rout of mixing up good and bad ingredients. Hence you have your personal responsibility to check your skin care products, the Ingredient List, every time you are ready to purchase any.

There are a lot of clinical stuties being done dedicated to breast cancer and other types of cancer. And for each of us, it is vital to be aware, to be alert and up-to-date on this information sans worries.
Toxic Ingredients in Skin Care Products
Here are some of the top toxic ingredients you need to be aware of when buying your personal cosmetics, skin care products included. BreastCancer.org talks about Parabens and Phthalates as the ingredients specifically studied for links to breast cancer. Read more HERE!
PEGS/PPGS – usually the humectants used in cosmetics and beauty products; the by-products of Petroleum production! They include: PEG, PPG, PEG-60, PEG laureate, Sodium laureate sulphate, PEG-40, Castor Oil and many others.
– PETROCHEMICALS – these ingredients often produce carcinogens as the result of their binding with each other. Look for names like MEA monoethanolamine (MEA), DEA diethanolamine (DEA), TEA triethanolamine (TEA), TEA-lauroyl, acetamide MEA, lactamide MEA, cocamide DEA, cocamine MEA.
– SYNTHETIC ALCOHOLS – these ingredients can play a huge role in starting skin irritations of all kinds. And eventually, some people can develop acne as the result of such use. Look for the names like Isopropyl palmitate, octyl palmitate, butylene glycol and propylene glycol.
– POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS – these ingredients come from petroleum-produced low-level impurities. Yes, impurities. Spot the names in an Ingredient list like Petroleum jelly (Petrolatum) and paraffin. Specifically, many face, hand and foot masks use paraffin as their main ingredient. One immediate effect on the skin, it can feel smooth and nice. The not-so-nice could be as mild as slight itching to more severe as skin burning and inflammation (dermatitis). And when the mask formula gets into an eye, it can irritate it and even cause a temporary blurred vision. It’s up to you to use skin treatments and to read and ask what’s in them!
– PARABEN-BASED PRESERVATIVES – any skin care product needs to be protected from microbial growth. It can be done in many different ways. These parabens help to extend the product shelf life. However, they may produce an allergic reaction, skin irritation and rashes to name a few. Look for the names like Ethyl paraben, methyl paraben, butyl paraben, propyl paraben.
– SYNTHETIC PRESERVATIVES – these types of preservatives are also used to extend the shelf life of the skin care products and other personal care products as well. Synthetic preservatives are cheaper than natural preservatives and can play better with other ingredients to create a smoother texture that a modern consumer so much likes. However, synthetic preservatives could be skin irritants and a trigger for skin sensitizing. And get this: synthetic preservatives can release a poisonous formaldehyde under the temperatures of 20+ degrees of Fahrenheit. Wow! Train your eyes to catch the names like Imidazolidinyl Urea and Diazolidinyl Urea, DMDM Hydrantoin, Methylchloroisothiazolinone.
– PHENOXYETHANOL – one more ingredient that is used to protect a skin care formulations and perfumes from the bacterial overwhelm and extend the product’s shelf life. Phenoxyethanol is definitely harmful when swallowed or absorbed through skin, especially when used by the expectant and nursing mothers. The skin could show signs of irritation and even blistering, depending how sensitive a person is to this ingredient. As an ethoxylated compound, phenoxyethanol can contain trace amounts of 1,4-dioxane which is a known carcinogen. Again, there are many safe alternatives to Phenoxyethanol in the product preservative world. Still, companies with overall great ingredients in their formulations keep using Phenoxyethanol alongside with them.
– SILICONE OILS – these oils are put into skin care to create a lovely texture. But you are smarter than that and can see beyond it, correct?! Silicones can be a culprit for skin irritations, allergies. Besides, they are comedogenic, meaning they clog the pores. And with clogged pores, skin can develop not just comedones, both black and white heads. More importantly, clogged pores can trigger internal inflammation that may become an on-going issue. Spot Silicones by their suffix ‘thicone’ like in dimethicone and cyclomethicone.
– ARTIFICIAL FRAGRANCE – sometimes you see the words ‘Fragrance’ or ‘Parfum’ on the label. It may denote up to 200 of different man-made chemicals that in a majority of cases cause allergic reactions and irritations of different sort. Sometimes, I see companies choosing the words ‘Fragrance’ or ‘Parfum’ for a totally amazing natural ingredient within the product’s formulation. I just do not get it why they use the wrong terminology to sway away their potential customer who knows what’s what.
– SYNTHETIC COLORS – You probably now can guess that synthetic colors come from the petroleum-based products. To be specific, the synthetic colors have coal tar as their progenitor. Like any petroleum by-product, these ingredients can be contaminated with heavy metal traces, which are considered to be carcinogenic. Skincare products containing synthetic colors may produce irritation, sensitizing, and clogged pores. And with clogged pores, there may be a development of internal inflammation. Pay attention to these names and avoid them: Blue 1, Green 3, Red 27 Lake, Yellow 5 Lake, CI (followed by a number).
– TRIENTHANOLAMINE (TEA) – when a formulation needs the pH adjustment, companies use this TEA ingredient to convert acid to salt. Depending on the quality of trienthanolamine, it can contain nitrosamines which are known skin sensitizers. Spot quickly these long words in the Ingredients section: Triethanolamine, TEA Stearate, TEA.

I care what kind of ingredients I purchase with my favorite skin care products and try to stay clear from a lot of toxic ingredients in the products that I purchase.
I didn’t until recently. I looked more into it because my skin was so dry and unnhealthy.
I don’t pay too much attention to the ingredients in the skin care products I use.
I don’t pay too much attention the ingredients in my beauty products but I need to be more aware.
Loved reading about toxic ingredients! I will keep my eye out for them!
I think this is so important. We should always know what is in our skincare products. I already have to be careful because I have very sensitive skin.
I definitely care about the ingredients in my skincare products. I don’t like toxic and chemical-based products.
I am allergic to anything with heavy perfumes. Right now I pretty much just use water alone to clean my face in the shower. Thanks and God Bless!
Rose,
I cannot stand the great majority of perfumes or perfumed products. They make me sick.
Hence I opt into something that is either unscented or has natural veggie or fruit flavors and aromas.
I’m not sure if my skin care products have any toxic ingredients. I have to go check.
Sharon,
Checking is always the first step in finding out!
I do care and pay attention to what ingredients are in my skincare products! I typically purchase hypoallergenic products!
These look like great products! Way better than the ones I use already.
I do care about what’s in my skincare. I love using all natural products.
I try to at least go with the least toxic skincare products.

This is such a great and informative post! I do love trying new products and do look for clean skincare as well.
This is really informative as I wasn’t aware that skincare ingredients actually will affect breast cancer. Until reading your sharing here I’m now learnt it. Will be more selective in term of my skincare ingredients now onwards, thanks! Cheers SiennyLovesDrawing.wordpress.com
Loving your skincare posts and especially Sally this one as clean ingredients are a must! I so wold love to give this product a try and check out all of them to be honest and I am pinning this post to come back to!
buy organic
I have to admit that I usually don’t really look to see what’s in my products, and they probably have toxic ingredients. I have to be more vigilant in the future!
I totally agree with this! We should be mindful of all the products and the food that we consume. I actually see to it that I review the ingredients of all the skincare that I use since a lot of toxic ingredients present in some brands is the one causing this dreaded disease.
Clarice,
Bravo for your reviewing all ingredients when you purchase a personal care product!
I do care about the ingredients I purchase in my favorite skin care products. My personal skin care don’t have any toxic ingredients now.

When it comes to skincare I am very particular about the safe ingredients in it. Your post is really very detailed and helpful.
Thanks for the info
I use blackseed oil and ozone soap.
I have always been frustrated about all the chemicals in beauty products. It is nice to bring awareness to this.
I am very concerned about the ingredients and need to use alcohol free products as my skin is very sensitive and will react to that and other added ingredients. I am currently using the Luxe 4 in 1 cleanser that I won from your last giveaway and absolutely love it.
Maria,
You and our skin have lucked out to have Luxe Beauty cleanser and other amazing products.
This giveaway will give a winner an incredible way to protect the skin throughout her body from TransEpidermal Water Loss and pathogens as well.
Good on you for writing such an important piece. I cannot believe that products are allowed on the market that are toxic it is an utter disgrace. Sending hugs xx
Melanie,
To our huge disappointment, the skin care formulations are not well regulated in this country. So, we need to take it on ourselves and have some knowledge about good and toxic ingredients in our personal care products. It is literally vital to our survival and happy life.
I completely agree! Such an important topic to talk about and bring attention too. I stopped using products with dyes and fragrances years ago. I could still definitely do better but I try to either make my own when it comes to scrubs and masks or use as natural and vegan as I can get when it comes to moisturizers and soaps.
I feel like skincare is such a massive thing – and it’s so important to make sure that you are not putting toxic things on your skin. Thank you for sharing this reminder!
Jupiter,
I am with you. Skin is our Largest organ. It is our breathing, protective, and multifunctional organ as well.
It needs a good care from our side and from the products we use.
Self-educating outselves on the skin care ingredients is the first step to our skin’s beauty.
Absolutely, understanding the ingredients in our skincare products is crucial for our health and well-being. It’s alarming how some ingredients can have such harmful effects, especially during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This serves as a reminder for all of us to prioritize our personal knowledge about what goes onto our skin. Let’s choose non-toxic options that keep us beautiful inside and out.
Sue-Tanya,
I feel that Breast Cancer Awareness Month is one of the best opportunities to remind our women to learn more what’s in their skin care and personal care products!
It is a very emotional month for many. And emotionality can drive us to learn and discover more things we need to know.
I would love to try this one, the ingredients seem perfect for my skin. I will try to buy it soon. Thank you so so much, this is great.
This is great information and very informative. Thanks for giving us tips and awareness for the ingredients of our skin care.
OMG, it’s crazy to me that there are things on the market that can affect your health like this! I thought there were rules in place for that kind of thing!
Claudia,
Unfortunately, skin care products and the formulations in them do not have a good regulatory arm in this country.
Hence you and I have total responsibility to know what we are allowing inside our bodies through the skin care products.
I never considered how ingredients in products like these could affect my health, especially when it comes to cancer. This was a real eye-opener!
Beth,
Happy to know that you’ve learned from this post. Keep coming back this month and beyond, as I am putting out more content every day.
Oh wow, well done for highlighting the ingredients that we should all be avoiding. I do try to stick to more natural beauty products where possible. They don’t normally have these ingredients thankfully.
As a wife and mother of three daughters, it’s not just my own well-being but also that of my family that matters to me. Your article has provided invaluable information about the potential risks associated with certain skincare ingredients, particularly in relation to breast cancer. Ty Ty Ty ❤️
Dear Lavanda Michelle,
You are so welcome.
It is vital we educate our daughters, and sons, too, about good and toxic ingredients in the skin care products and personal care as well.
Useful read on toxic ingredients that may be found in skincare products. I shall keep in mind now.
Indu,
Yes, it’s a good reference material!
It is good to highlight beauty products, I look for products that are safe for our skins, thank you for sharing
