The changes in the body and how menopause affects skin call for understanding in the first place. When you get a grasp of the causes of the drastic changes your body undergoes in menopause, you can make powerful changes in your life.
As a large majority of women notice and complain about drastic changes in their skin feel and look during menopause, I choose to focus on these issues.
Without doubt that hormonal changes and the effects of your personal lifestyle place a mark on your skin. The changes in the skin that you seemingly suddenly notice are the result of potent hormonal shifts taking place in your body. And here are some key changes in the skin that prompt for a focused skin care routine.
Main Changes In the Skin During Menopause
As I plan to focus on the benefits of bakuchiol and retinol for the menopause skin, here’s what you need to know first. In fact being aware of the reasons, the “why’s” behind any skin care product use during menopause allows you to make wise choices for your day and night skin care regimens.
As retinols have been used for a long time and well-tested, one of the latest clinical studies in 2018 have confirmed the effectiveness of use of both retinol and bakuchiol. They both visible decreased wrinkle surface and hyperpigmentation in subjects (read the study results HERE). However, bakuchiol proved to be a much gentler alternative to retinol, which makes the former a super ingredient for sensitive, dry skin many menopause women experience.
Fine Lines And Wrinkles
One of the primary concerns during menopause is a more pronounced appearance and domination of fine lines and deeper wrinkles. Decrease in collagen and elastin production in the skin results in their formation. But the prime reason for this process is decrease in email hormone estrogen.
Estrogen production peaks i early 20s, and then slowly begins its decline. By 50, when an average woman enters menopause, estrogen experiences its drastic drop in production. As this hormone plays many key roles in the body, the lack of this amazing chemical begins to affect many systems and organs, skin included.
FACT: Retinol is known for tis ability to stimulate collagen production, hence minimizing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
Skin Thinning During Menopause
Another visible trend a woman sees in her skin is its thinning. Due to a decrease in estrogen levels, the skin tends to become thinner, especially around your eye area.
Thinning skin is more prone to dryness, damage and increased sensitivity.
FACT: Retinol can help promote cell turnover, which may lead to thicker, more resilient skin.
In fact, you can retrain your skin cells to regenerate faster during menopause and even if you’ve never used a retinol product. But once you’ve tried and see the results, you’ll be a forever friend of retinols!
And as you will learn and see from the facts further in this post, bakuchiol presents a gentler alternative to retinol. So any woman in menopause should be able to benefit from retinol or bakuchiol without any downtime or downsides!
Prevalent Uneven Skin Tone and Texture
What about the changes in tone and texture of your skin during menopause? In fact, hormonal fluctuations can lead to the development of age spots, hyperpigmentation, leading to an uneven complexion. I know a lot of women who experience this very situation trying to find a solution to a younger-looking skin, again.
FACT: Retinol aids in the exfoliation of dead skin cells, promoting a smoother skin texture and reducing the appearance of discoloration.
Loss of Firmness and Elasticity
As I mentioned decreased collagen and elastin production during menopause can also contribute to a loss of skin firmness and elasticity. This can result in sagging skin and the formation of jowls or a less defined jawline.
FACT: Retinol’s ability to stimulate collagen production can help improve skin firmness and tightness.
Skin Dullness and Dryness
Hormonal changes in menopause can lead to decreased sebum production, causing the skin to become drier and more prone to dullness. Skin dryness and dulness goes hand-in-hand with skin thinning. But you can drastically improve your skin’s ability to thrive even during any and all hormonal fluctuations.
FACT: Retinol can aid in boosting cell turnover, revealing fresher skin and promoting a more radiant and youthful appearance.
Additionally, its exfoliating properties can help remove dead skin cells and improve moisture retention in the skin.
Retinol is a golden standard of a skin care product during menopause. Its proven ability to address multiple signs of aging and changes in the skin makes it a great product.
As always, please consult a skincare professional to determine your regimen and best rational skin care product based on your needs and sensitivities. Every woman is unique, and so are her skin care needs.
Can I Use Bakuchiol And Retinol At the Same Time?
Yes, you can include skin care products containing bakuchiol and retinol at the same time. As these ingredients belong to the same group of ingredients, they work in synergy during their application, maximizing the final effect on the skin.
By using skincare with Bakuchiol, you reap benefits originating from its natural origin and gentle nature.
Bakuchiol Benefits on Menopause Skin
1. Gentle Alternative to Retinol for women who may have a more sensitive skin or sensitized skin. Potential side-effects like skin irritation, redness, dryness could be avoided with bakuchiol
2. Hydration and Moisture Retention of bakuchiol strengthen the skin barrier, diminishing TransEpidermal Water Loss (TEWL). With enhanced hydration, your skin improves its overall health, immunity, and looks, too. It becomes plump and fresh looking. Women in menopause who experience skin dryness can truly benefit from skin care products containing bakuchiol.
3. Anti-Aging Effects of Bakuchiol result in diminished fine lines, wrinkles and age spots. Consistent and methodical use of skin care with bakuchiol leads to the improved overall texture and tone of the skin, making it look more youthful and radiant.
Retinol Benefits on Menopause Skin
Regular use of retinol-based skincare has been proven to have long-term benefits for the menopause skin. Regular use over time can lead to improvement in increased collagen production and reduced sings of aging.
1. Potent Anti-Aging Effects of Retinol on Skin has been well-studied. It helps stimulate collagen production, smooth out wrinkles, improve skin texture, and promote a more youthful appearance of your skin.
2. Targeted Results for Retinol Use has been in addressing specific skincare concerns like fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone and texture. Retinol is known for its ability to deliver noticeable results and is often recommended to women who are looking for powerful anti-aging solutions.
3. Acne Treatment that can be beneficial for women in menopause who may experiencing hormonal breakouts. Retinol skin care products help to unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and regulate sebum production. All that results in clearer skin, improved skin tone and texture as well.
For acneic skin, you may want to look for skin care products that offer a combination of Retinol and Niacinamide OR Bakuchiol and Niacinamide.
As retinol supports cell turnover, skin gains its renewed cover in the form of younger and healthy skin cells. It can also reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, sunspots, and other discoloration, giving the skin a more radiant and even-toned appearance.
What to Know About Combining Niacinamide and Retinol
Niacinamide is one of the amin forms of vitamin B3. And you would be pleased to know about at least 3 key roles niacinamide plays to maintain your menopause skin. In fact, it actually would improve the quality of your skin if you use it regularly and methodically.
A fact is Niacinamide plays a stabilizing role for your skin’s epidermal barrier. If you don’t have a solid, well-maintained skin barrier, you may be more prone to loosing water and attacks from the outside pathogens of all sorts. When your skin is whole, it is well-moisturized, looks more plump, more youthful.
Another amazing quality of Niacinamide is its inhibiting mechanism of melanosome transfer caused by solar radiation. It means Niacinamide reduces formation of hyperpigmentation, those sun spots that become more prominent as you continue skin exposure to the sun light.
With a calming quality of Niacinamide, your skin is a great place when combining the use of this beautiful ingredient with retinol or bakuchiol.
Differences Between Bakuchiol and Retinol
While bakuchiol and retinol are both popular skincare ingredients with anti-aging properties, they have some notable differences. Here are four key differences between bakuchiol and retinol. I could probably list more differences between these two ingredients. However, you will relate to the outlined differences being a woman in menopause.
Natural Origin
Bakuchiol is a natural compound derived from the seeds of the Psoralea corylifolia plant. It is often sought after by individuals looking for more natural or plant-based skincare options. Retinol, on the other hand, is a synthetic compound created in a lab.
Sensitivity and Irritation
Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, can be quite potent and may cause skin sensitivity, redness, irritation, and dryness, especially for individuals with sensitive skin. On the other hand, bakuchiol is generally considered to be well-tolerated and less likely to cause the same level of irritation and sensitivity. Women in menopause who suffer from skin sensitivities and thinned skin could really take advantage of bakuchiol-based products.
Speaking of skin sensitivities, bakuchiol is not a photo-sensitizing compound. It means that it won’t increase skin sensitivity when being exposed to sun’s UV radiation. Hence you can wear a skin product containing bakuchiol when you’re out and about! That’s good news! Just wear your SPF sunscreen lotion for menopause skin!
Difference in Mode of Action
Retinol works by binding to specific receptors in the skin, leading to increased cell turnover and collagen production. Bakuchiol, while not a direct retinol mimic, has been found to have some similar effects on the skin, such as stimulating collagen production and promoting cell renewal. However, the exact mechanisms by which bakuchiol works are still being studied.
Photostability Aspect
Retinol can be sensitive to light and air exposure that can degrade its efficacy over time. As for bakuchiol, it is generally more stable and less prone to degradation, allowing for a longer shelf life and potentially better product performance.
Skin Care Products With Bakuchiol
Without exaggeration, the market is flooded with skin care containing bakuchiol or retinol. Your role in the ocean of a million products is to pick and choose the best.
And “the best” in my lexicon means non-toxic ingredients plus the effectiveness of a skin care formulation.

This article is packed with lots of useful information.
I have certainly noticed thinning skin and being more prone to sun and wind damage so needing to be more protective with sunscreen and wearing hats. For me moisturizing is very important, but my skin can be sensitive to any harsh ingredients, so I need to be careful to use gentle products.
I am definitely struggling with my skin as I approach menopause. I was not familiar with bakuchiol or even retinol. I will have to think about changing up my skincare routine.
Marysa,
If it helps, Bakuchiol is a mild version of Retinol which is responsible for skin exfoliation, cellular turnover and formation of new collagen “pads.”
You can use bakuchiol AM and PM. I’d recommend using any retinol product for your PM/Night skin regimen. The reason is retinol’s ability to sensitize your skin if and when it is exposed to the sun radiation.
So, to avoid any unnecessary development of sensitivity, allocate retinol use for the night time.
I have never heard about anything like this before! It was helpful to have the information you provided. Your sharing of it is greatly appreciated.
Zab,
You’ll learn a ton of things on these pages. Welcome!
Thank you for all the great info!
Thank you for this informative and comprehensive guide on bakuchiol and retinol for menopausal skin! Your explanations of the ingredients, their benefits, and product recommendations are really helpful. I feel more confident now in choosing the right skincare for my changing skin. Keep up the great work! ??
Monidipa,
Thank you, lovely, for this feedback.
Having the confidence to choose the right products and care for your skin us invaluable!
I’ll have to pass this info on to my mom. It’s so nice to see topics surrounding menopause and feminine care being spoken about more openly. Thank you for sharing!
Tammy,
Any woman in menopause would be grateful for any information that helps her skin health and well-being.
I have a lot of young women in my readership who began their menopause due to illness, surgery or accident.
Menopause is not “an old age” condition. It can hit you at a young age. To know and be aware how to deal with may issues menopause presents for a woman, including her skin, is something I recognize and support my clients and my audience on this blog and social media.
Not many sources are out there to learn from and discover a non-toxic way to fortify the skin, so it could serve us as a functional organ and as a beautiful accessory as well. That’s what I am after!
This is great and super helpful! Happy to know the differences and which one to use better. I’d love to learn more about these products.
Great, Nadalie!
So happy it can help you and support your smart skin care routine!
I didn’t even know what bakuchiol was so this post was super helpful, I will have to try it out and see if it is better for my skin!
Luna,
It’s empowering to know what your ingredients do to your skin and your overall well-being.
Bakuchiol may sound different and weird, but the positive effect it brings to the skin is truly amazing.
Thanks for sharing all this information with us! I enjoy reading this article will save this for the future.
Welcome, Marie!
Bakuchiol, is a new one on me, I am forever learning so much valuable information from your blog posts. I am going to have to try bakuchiol, as I am now in my forties so perfect timing xx
Melanie,
What I personally appreciate about bakuchiol is its non-sensitising quality, i.e., it’s OK to wear it when we go outside and are exposed to the sun.
And when we combine bakuchiol with niacinamide, wow, the effect on hyperpigmentation could be totally amazing.
I’ve been experimenting with my pigmentation on the skin using different products, ingredients and their combination. But adding niacinamide to the mix really makes a difference.
Women in menopause who suffer from skin sensitivities and thinned skin can really take advantage of bakuchiol-based products.
Beth,
Ditto! We just really need to watch what ingredients we choose in each of the product. There are a lot of oxidants and irritants in skin care formulations. It’s a given in the industry that is still not regulated by FDA.
I am in my 40s and I use a moisturiser that contains retinol every night and I feel that it really does make a difference.
Ash,
Keep your routine if it’s working for you. Also do add the ingredients that could add more value to your skin’s cellular robust functioning. And bakuchiol is one of them.
As it is a nature-born ingredient (retinol is lab-formulated), your skin shall receive additional phytonutrients and elements you’ll never find in the lab product.
There is so much to learn, and it’s so relatable as I am on menopause right now. Thank you! I get it the benefits of Bakuchiol and heard a lot about Mandelic acid, but do you know about Edelweiss? It says ‘antioxidant’ from the Regelica package, and I am curious to learn more about it. I am happily following you!
Susan,
It is correct that the extract of edelweiss flower is a super potent antioxidant.
As the flower grows on high elevations in the Alps, it has to withstand a wide change in temperature and extreme exposure to the UV radiation from the sun. Because of the climate, the flowers have developed a huge resilience to the outside factors to protect their own entity.
That is why the edelweiss extract boasts of more potency than vitamin C. The same extract performs anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial functions, and it is a mega antioxidant.
Edelweiss extract plays well with any ingredient and is a good addition to any formulation.
There’s another skin care serum with Edelweiss flower extract + Niacinamide. It is expensive, but does work wonders on the skin, working on hyperpigemented spots on the skin ===> CLICK HERE (affiliate)
NB: Edelweiss can be compared with Sea Buckthorn that grows on high elevations in Tibet. The qualities of that small orange berry are truly stupendous. Check out my latest post on it (FYI: I’ve been eating and using this berry in many ways and forms since childhood) ==> Click to Read my Post

Could you give us more examples of the skin products containing bakuchiol and niacinamide, please?
Yes, Maria,
I can update the post with more product examples that have a Non-toxic Ingredient list and Bakuchiol in the formulation. Give me a couple of days, please and check back with the post.
Can I use bakuchiol with vitamin C products?
Stella,
Yes, bakuchiol and vitamin C are greta buddies, so to say, to be combined in the same use. Depending on your skin, try to apply vitamin C product first, then follow up with bakuchiol formulation.
You will find that many formulations have vitamin C inside. As many plants, fruit extracts are natural vitamin C sources, you just need to see if there are any of them listed on the Ingredient list.
Awesome info! Could you please give us more examples on skin care products? I love your product suggestions and would love to try them all. But my budget is tight right now. Any other options with similar ingredients? Thank you!
Tina,
Yes, let me update the post with more skin care products examples containing Bakuchiol you could incorporate into your skin care regimen.
I am loving that you give us an explanation how things work in our skin. I learn a lot and it’s easier to understand why I need this product and not that. I am really looking forward to trying this Regelica cream. But as you say the combination with their serum makes it so much more effective. Will be following your lead!
Sarah,
Regelica is a definite thumbs up from me. The ingredient list is stellar, non-toxic, and has some amazingly effective ingredients.
When you use Regelica’s serum, followed by the cream, you get a potent skin care treatment every time! The results will show up. Just be consistent.
I have so much to learn. Geez, it’s crazy how many things we need to know to navigate in menopause. But I am thankful you give information in small bits and you are very specific. Love that you care about non toxic ingredients and women’s health.
Katherine,
Happy to hear you enjoy the content that works for you!
Staying on the learning path is what makes us informidable in our reaching the goals, which is a beautiful well-being.
I am so happy to hear that bakuchiol is another ingredient to put on my radar. Always for it to optimize my skin care.
Emma,
Bakuchiol is one of the forthcoming ingredients that is being used by more and more brands and companies. Just make sure other ingredients are as good and non-toxic as you want them to be.
This is a new brand I’ve never seen before. I need to learn more about Regelica. Thank you for keeping us informed and up to date on all things menopause skin.
Elizabeth,
Regelica is a brand to watch for and use, too. The beginning is very promising.
You make it so easy to understand what ingredients are for in all the skin care products there are out there! I am excited about bakuchiol and niacinamide together to try. This regelica skin care sounds promising for my skin. I really want to work on my sun spots. Your recommended products for cleansers are awesome! I use double cleansing to get my skin smoother and it works. So happy. What a cool post to begin my Sunday! I am excited!
Shelly,
Your excitement is contagious! What a thrill to find more skin care products that beautify our skin and make it more resilient! Enjoy and explore!
Your product selections are so on point Celebrate Woman Today! I am a reader of your blog for many years. And when you began to focus on menopause skin and giving us product examples to use I got a couple skin products you suggested. They were AHA cleansers from Eminence which I love and keep buying. You are right to be consistent with the skin routine and keep adjusting. I would like to try Regelica products as well. They seem to be up my ally to work on my sun spots.
Marianna,
You are amazing in your journey for a beautiful, resilient skin!
Eminence is one of my go-to brands for many skin care products.
And Regelica is a new kid on the block that offers a serum and a cream to correct and maintain skin in ship-shape.
Sun spots can be addressed well by using Regelica’s both products. The serum is a great exfoliator, working while you are wearing a product; and a cream combines retinol qualities in a milder, yet effective way with a high clinical dose of niacinamide that works on your skin barrier and has the sun protective mechanism as well.
Gosh, retinol, bakuchiol, what else is there? I learn so much from your posts! Now I know what my skin could have in abundance without being afraid to go outside and expose it to the sun. So happy that bakuchiol is so much gentler and not so photosensitive. Loving it!
Helen,
Yes, bakuchiol is much gentler on the skin than retinol. That is why it is highly advised to apply Retinol products before bed time.
To avoid any reactions during the daily sun exposure, avoid retinol application during your morning skin care routine.
However, it is OK to use bakuchiol-based products for your AM application.
I’ve been seeing all this rah-rah-rah about bakuchiol. But you made it clear to me what it is all about. I would like to use these skin products you recommend to incorporate into my daily routine. Thanks to you I have tried some super incredible products that I keep using in my life. And they made my skin so much better. Thank you for educating us here on all things menopause skin. Super helpful information I do not see anywhere else.
