While they may go glam for the red carpet, some celebrities care just as much about going green. From contributing to an eco-friendly cause to starting their own foundation, these A-list artists are serving up environmental inspiration.
Sheryl Crow
Singer Sheryl Crow often takes her environmental activism on the road, most evident with her 2007 Stop Global Warming College Tour. Her past concerts have included eco-villages that house booths with information from a wide variety of environmental groups, biodegradable and compostable catering and reusable water bottles.
These days, Crow is making environmentalism fashionable by teaming with the denim recycling program Blue Jeans Go Green. This program is asking consumers to recycle used denim to help rebuild New Orleans by insulating houses. “It’s a really simple way to help the environment, help communities in need and complete an environmental cycle that begins on the farm and ends with us,” said Crow.

Adrian Grenier
When he’s not doubling as Vincent Chase in “Entourage,” actor Adrian Grenier uses his fame much differently than his alter ego. After co-producing the Discovery series about green lifestyle, “Alter Eco,” Grenier co-founded the lifestyle platform SHFT, which provides information on sustainable living through film, design, art and food.
Grenier recently partnered with Dell computers as their “Social Good Advocate”, aka environmental watchdog, spreading the word about the company’s environmental goals.
Brad Pitt
Like Crow, Brad Pitt is a big New Orleans activist. He has dedicated countless hours to build green, affordable housing to families in New Orleans affected by Hurricane Katrina. Through his Make It Right Foundation, Pitt helped to build 150 green homes, which was recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council as the largest, and most eco-friendly neighborhood of single-family homes.
His love of architecture (as evident by his furniture line Pitt-Pollaro), is felt around the world in his efforts to build environmentally-friendly buildings and sustainable designs.
AnnaSophia Robb
“It’s more important than you think,” is the former “Carrie Diaries” actress’ tagline for her environment cause, Recycle Across America. This non-profit aims to simplify recycling so people not only start recycling, but do so the right way.
AnnaSophia Robb is so dedicated to the cause, she has said she’ll dive into a dumpster just to help recycle a water bottle.
Leonardo DiCaprio
Leonardo DiCaprio’s passion about preserving and protecting the earth led him to establish The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, which aims to “create a harmonious relationship between humanity and the natural world.”
The foundation’s goals reach climate change, disaster relief, protecting endangered species and providing clean water, among other issues. His work was recognized in 2014 by the Clinton Foundation at the Clinton Global Citizen Awards.
Gisele Bundchen
As the current Global Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme, supermodel Gisele Bundchen uses her celeb status to help the UN bring attention to environmental issues.
Her work, which includes a flip-flop line to call attention to the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest, as well as the Clean Water Project, was awarded the Global Environmental Citizen Award by Harvard Medical School. Bundchen also received the Best Green International Celebrity Award.
Ian Somerhalder
Taking a cue from DiCaprio, “Vampire Diaries” star Ian Somerhalder founded the Ian Somerhalder Foundation in 2010 to educate people on having a positive environmental impact.
The foundation does this by collecting and distributing funds to other non- and for-profits partners, to help global conservation, green energy development and creating awareness, particularly among youth.
Hayden Panettiere
Hayden Panettiere may play a rising country star on “Nashville,” but in real life she has been recognized for being a rising star in environmental activism.
Honored at the 2013 Environmental Media Awards with the Futures Award, Panettiere’s passion to ecological causes lends itself to the Whaleman Foundation – an oceanic research and conservation group that aims to protect oceans and sea creatures. Her passion for the ocean’s inhabitants have led her to risk her life to save dolphins from being harmed by fishermen.

So good to learn about the way these celebs are using their talents and names to make the world a healthier place for all of us. Kudos to all of them for speaking up and taking on such an important cause.
It’s great to see celebrities giving back and caring about the environment! A few of these are my favorite celebs… I knew I liked them for a reason.
Awesome way to give back and make sure that their celebrity doesn’t out weight their impact as people.
These 8 are so amazing. A friend of mine met Brad Pitt before Angelina Jolie and said he got to talk to him and Brad Pitt had always wanted to better the environment. After Jolie, he seemed to do a whole lot more. They are a great team.
It’s nice when big names can lend more than their names to helping make our planet greener.
we just started with a recycling service and I feel so much better already. Because I’m sending what can be recycled to the recycling!! I saw Adrien’s show on Discovery it was really good.
I am happy to see celebs standing up for our planet. It takes everyone working together to keep our planet healthy so that it will be here for generations to come.
It’s really nice when you see famous celebs do things for a cause. I really hope that they get more people to follow.
If more people like this would help the environment and people more instead of their other antics and wasteful spending, it could bring lots of change. Why spend a million dollars on a birthday party – stupid.
Leonardo DiCaprio has really grown on me, nice to him on the list x
Great to know that popular people are getting involved in terms of preserving the ecosystem and the environment. KUDOS to them!
Its nice once in a while to read about celebrities doing something ecofriendly and giving back to their communities in some shape or form
I think it’s wonderful firstly that these celebs are so dedicated to this cause but also because they are using their fame and power to bring light to this cause!
You know what, his is refreshing! In a world we lots of things are handed to celebrities, I love to see those that are giving back because really unless you are a big star or a financial success, the average person does not have the ability to make the strides to better humanity than those with some money in their pockets! This is so nice to hear!
I think it’s wonderful when celebrities use their wealth and success to support important causes! Hearing that they are supportive and encouraging of various environmental and social organizations does make a difference in how I view different celebs!
so much celebrity power in one post great information thansk for sharing =)
It’s nice to see celebrities supporting a cause. They are great ambassadors and would influence a lot of people to do the right thing.
I’m not usually one to praise celebs but thi is something I will totally praise! Love it when people with influence use there fame to better the world!
Nice to see these famous people giving their time and money to such great causes that help the environment. I read about Gisele and Tom’s house being one of the most green even built. Great example.
It’s always awesome to see celebrities give back and use their influence for good. Even better when it’s a bit under the radar and not clearly just PR.
These beautiful, famous women and mmm sharp, looking famous men have it all (or so it looks) yet they spend their time and money trying to make our world a better place for our children and grand-children. I think this is absolutely wonderful. They could be thinking of themselves and living high like so many do. These are the kind of people the younger generation look up to and we need more of them.
This is so great that these celebrities are making eco strides. It really gets others thinking about eco issues. Thanks for sharing.
It’s so cool that so many celebrities are making a difference in the world. People like to do what celebrities do so it’s a great opportunity for them to use their fame to create positive change.
I think it’s amazing when celebs use their voice for good. It always makes me impressed.
I think it is great that they are doing all they can to help the environment. I wish it were more affordable for us all to go green. Those that can afford it definitely should have solar panels, alternative energy sources, green cleaning products, etc.
It’s nice to know that celebrities are helping their environment long the way!
It’s good to know people in positions like these use their wealth and fame to do things like this. They’re all part of some great programs!
Its nice to point out when celeb are being eco-friendly. I didnt know many of these celebs were apart of the lifestyle!
I love it when celebrities do things like these. They really make a great impact as role models and they get more people to follow them.
WOW and what a great program I did not know existed! I think anyone who helps out the people of Louisiana whether a celebrity or not, is extraordinary! Sometimes I think celebrities do things like this to improve their image, but I would hope the above listed are doing it because they are passionate about it!
I love that more and more celebrities are becoming publicly concerned with the environment, it makes them more of a role model to our children too. I had no idea about the insulation either – so clever!
I am glad that celebrities are taking up the environmental banner–they and their children will have to live in this world too and this old world needs a lot of help!! I never knew about blue jeans being used as insulation in homes in Louisiana–what a great idea!!
