There are thousands of senior pets awaiting their happy – and in many cases lucky – moment to be adopted into a forever family. If we could look at both sides of the equation – age and benefits of it – we could count many blessings an older, senior, pet could bring into our lives.
Usually older pets are much settled in their habits and their behaviors and could develop a very tight bond with you. These pets may want to spend more time by you or time alone napping or watching the outside world happening in front of their eyes. For many people such pets could create some powerful benefits in an emotional well-being.
Benefits In Adopting A Senior Pet
November, being a month of Senior Pet Adoption Awareness, let’s get count some awesome benefits of welcoming a senior pet into our lives. Do keep in mind that these pets could be a blessing and devoted companions to any age or abilities group of humans: older parents, young children, people with different abilities and needs. What we need to know is the following:
Like with anything else in life, we need to educate ourselves about any novelty topic and support it with facts and experiences from others.
Senior pets can transform our lives by offering a myriad of benefits. These benefits can be easily applied to the needs of a human family and matched to a pet that would be a perfect companion in life.
Senior pets have manners and are less destructive
Senior dogs and cats are more mellow and look into more time spent with you petting them. Parents will get less frustration with an older pet rather than starting a new training and learning cycle with a new puppy or kitten.
One thing to keep in mind though: those pets that have been through multiple homes and have been poorly trained may present a challenge at least in the beginning. As a result, getting support of your pet online communities could be a way to look for help and invaluable instructions how to handle this situation.
You can teach an old dog or cat new tricks
First and foremost, most of senior pets already know their commands and come with the experience of life. Either a dog or a cat would respond to their new environment better when you could establish a routine for them.
As one of the senior pet tips, try feed, walk, play, exercise them on a schedule which would help your senior pets to get accustomed to a new life dynamic. You could be surprised how responsive these senior pets would be!
Fact: Senior Pets Can Greatly Benefit from Companionship with You.
Senior pets are awesome with kids and senior people
Kids will be delighted how patient senior pets are! These pets will spend time by their little masters and bask in their attention. Those kids with special needs would be especially pleased to find a devoted friend in a senior dog or cat.
An older cat or dog could be a life savior for senior people. As the lives of these both groups – pets and people – are very much a scheduled routine, it would be a blessing to have a pet who responds to such life dynamic eagerly.
Both of the above groups – kids and seniors – would receive companions who would bond with them forever. A senior pet temperament is what you see when you visit with it for the first time. No surprises later, yet a ton of benefits for all involved.

Awe good post, I just had a dog pass away and feel like I need to get another but didn’t know where to start looking, this gives me assurance that I can get an older animal and be fine. The food looks like it has the right balance of our animals needs in it.
I recently adopted a 10 yr. old cat. If I hadn’t, they were just going to put her out at the fire dept. where I met them. She’s sweet and loving. They were jerks that lied about everything about her. I do not know why people keep getting rid of their pets like this. We live in a sad world! Senior animals are more loving, if possible. I love them all.
Tawny,
I am so happy to hear this happy story!
Yes, any pet can become a joy-full companion!
Happy Holidays to you and your furrrr ball!
The dog that my family adopted last December was 7 years old at the time. While puppies are cute, so many older dogs need homes. Any future dogs that I adopt will likely be older!
That is so awesome. Adopting a senior pet is God’s work. It’s so hard for them to find homes.
I can totally get you .My parents adopted a senior pet. How quickly he gel into our family one can ever imagine than compare to young ones. Surely a joy.
What an adorable cat!
We recently adopted two cats, and one is an older cat. She is missing all of her teeth except her fangs, and she is blind in one eye. She is the sweetest cat and she has started to settle in to our home comfortably. I have never had an older cat and we are so happy to have provided her a safe home. I’ll have to look into the senior cat food.
I’ve been meaning to try Science Diet with my cat. It’s picky so I try to tread lightly on the changes though haha!
I absolutely ADORE this! There is no greater pet-related thing you can do than adopting a senior animal. It’s so hard for them to find homes, and they need them the most of all.
Audrey,
I am with you. Older pets have so much grace about them!
Plus those people who foster them do make a difference in finding good homes, forever families, for these senior pets.
Way to go!
The old saying, “It’s tough to teach old dogs new tricks” isn’t true right. But if a senior pet needs a home, and you need a companion, then why not.
I actually only adopt senior pets at the pound. I know they are often passed up and are far less fortunate! All my senior pets that I’ve adopted have been amazing, wonderful additions to the family and never regret the decision!
We have been thinking about adding a new pat to our family but it’s scary. We lost our dog over Easter and my kids were very sad. So, I would be afraid for them to experience it with a senior pet to soon.
This has actually been a topic of discussion recently in our house. We’re thinking about getting another dog, but want to go the shelter route.
I wish I could adopt more pets and certainly senior pets would be a welcome in our home. I am glad that there is an effort out there shining on the benefits of adopting older pets as so many get destroyed waiting for someone to hopefully adopt them. Pets no matter what age bring such joy to peoples lives, especially seniors who live alone and need companionship. Pets, no matter what age equal unconditional love and companionship.
I agree totally that a senior pet would be a blessing for seniors who are stuck in their homes the majority of the time. It is why more and more you are seeing visiting dogs and resident cats in nursing homes.
Michele,
I am so happy to see that pets have become an organic way to add to all kinds of therapies in the hospitals and different institutions with special needs residents.
Pets are healing.
