Our pets are our friends and companions who bring an immense amount of joy and happiness. And for many, their pets are the essential component for an independent living and managing daily lives.
But like humans, pets tend to grow older. Our responsibility is to notice any changes within our aging pet and respond with measured, effective solutions. Usually, a trip to the vet office for a 7+ old kitty could be a beneficial experience for both animal and owner alike. The vet and owner will work together to come up with a plan for the senior cat. This includes food choices and exercise regiment.
So, let us outline the areas that could be indicative of our pet’s aging. Paying attention to the older cat’s behavior would allow us to catch anything out-of-ordinary in its behavior and address it in a timely manner.
HOW-TO Spot Signs of An Aging Pet
When you notice any of the signs below in your cat behavior – the time has come to go for a vet visit.
THINKING
If you notice that your cat is confused about the ordinary things like finding its bed, drinking fountain or food bowl. This is a sign to take your pet to the vet for its overall exam.
ACTIVITY
As our cats are getting older, we do notice that they prefer to spend more time in bed, avoiding active play. Even one-on-one play could become more difficult for an older kitty.
INTERACTIONS
With age, our cats slow down the socializing with their owners and prefer to keep to themselves, spending time quietly in their favorite spots.
LOSS OF CONTROL
If you notice that your aging pet starts to have accidents – it would be useful to take her to the vet for a well-being check-up. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends that pets have a senior screening at about age 7.
SLEEP-WAKE CYCLE
Aging in your cat comes with more awake cycles at night.
Our trips to the vet and food for senior cats could truly make a huge difference in the quality of our senior cat’s life and our interaction with our beloved pet.

Having a good diet is definitely important.. Probably the most important part of good health.
We do not have any furry friends except a dog! It is so important to feed our pets the best.
Great to know all these facts and about Science Diet. We don’t have cats, but my husband used to have two.
I’ll have to try Hill’s® Science Diet® for my cat. I’ve tried all types of different foods for her but so far only one doesn’t give her tummy problems. Hope that’s the case with Hill’s® Science Diet® too.
It is very important to feed your pets the right type of food, especially as they get older. Your cat is adorable and this food is definitely agreeing with him!
I’m not a cat person but my dogs are my babies. We love Science Diet!
It’s definitely important to keep your aging pets on the best food possible to keep them at their best. I just hate that our pets age faster than we do.
Activity when they are younger, routine vet care, and giving them the best food is helpful at keeping them young. Your cat is beautiful.
These are great tips! Our pets health should be as important as our own.
I haven’t had a cat in a while, but we do have a dog. And it does make me sad to think about him aging, even though I know that is coming. :(.
David,
I feel pain when I feel this through and imagine that my furry babies will pass away. I just want to love them more and celebrate their companionship to the max. Give them more by taking good care of them.
This is a great resource for cat owners. My mother in law has a senior kitty I will have to pass this along to her.
Whoaa! I will try this for my cats. I like it! Very helpful.

I used to have cats when I was younger, but I can’t really be around them now since I became allergic to them as I got older. However, the cat lovers in my life can benefit from this information. 🙂
My cousin has a senior cat. This sounds like a great food for the kitties. I will share this with her.

What a unique kitty! We just lost our cat in February from a health issue. She was 10 and starting to show her age. It is nice to have products that help with the aging process.
I will have to ask our vet about this next time we take Tibet in. She is 15 years old now and going strong but iwe can always do more to help her live even longer!

We have two cats, and they are getting older. I love that the Science Diet for older cats has so many great things, like fatty acids for a pretty coat.
This is SUCH a good post! All animals need better nutrition as they age, but it’s really important for cats. They live so long, if they don’t have a good diet, they can get SO sick.
