A fact is your anti-aging skin care routine begins in your teens. Yes, it’s true. In this post, I’ll focus on the main concerns the skin undergoes decade-by-decade. Enjoy and remember that taking care of your skin is never too late.
What is that often-spoken-about anti-aging skin care routine that supposedly will make us look great no matter what? First, we need to understand and take into the account the physiological factors of our skin. Second, we need to understand that each decade a woman enters offers its unique opportunities to improve her skin well-being.
I’ve invited Adriana Martino, an esthetician who operates SKINNEY Medspa and Wellness in New York City, to shed a light on a few key skin care factors.
Adriana states that many women don’t realize their skin care regimen needs to change as they get older.
“The same things that work for you in your 30s may not be the best for your skin when you’re in your 50s,” says Martino. “But my older customers don’t seem as aware about what they should be doing.”
While there are some general rules that we all have to follow – like daily sunscreen, for instance – there are others specific to different ages. What should you be doing now? Here’s a look.
Are You Following the Right Skin Care Routine For Your Age?
The best anti-aging skin care routine is the one that falls into the right age gap every woman is in that moment of time. We should begin a simple skin care routine when we are in early teens. Many dermatologists I spoke to say that the age of 12 for a girl is the time to begin follow a simple skin regimen that allows her to learn the road to self care and understanding the basic skin problems.
Learning the correct techniques of easy and simple face cleansing is one of the best ways to prevent many skin problems.
Take a look at this post highlighting Damaging Face Washing Mistakes. Yes, such do exist. Just changing one thing could be the key to a better skin health.
Skin Care Routine In 30s
Adriana Martino says the 30s are when many women start to notice fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth. Pigmentation from sun exposure is also more visible at this age.
“The first thing I would recommend is using a good eye cream at night that has peptides, which stimulate the production of collagen,” she says. “You should also be sure to use moisturizer regularly – and make it a water-based one.”
“You also want to make sure you’re exfoliating regularly – at least once a week. And I recommend having a facial once a month, especially if you’re prone to breakouts.” My personal opinion on the facials is different. I’ve never had one in my life, as I consider it to be very harsh on the skin.
Therefore, in our 30s, women should focus on these anti-aging skin care solutions in their daily regimen.
Wear sun screen products for skin protection
Make sure that SPF should be 30 as the minimum. The higher SPF doesn’t really bring up the protective value of the product.
Make sure that your sunscreens have zero harmful ingredients. Not all sunscreens are created equal! You can check all the coral-friendly sunscreens HERE, I hand-picked them for anybody who cares.
Zinc oxide is the ingredient you need to look for! It protects against UVA and UVB rays and does not get absorbed by the skin. Instead, it sits on top and deflects the sun’s rays like a mirror would.
Titanium dioxide is another barrier sunscreen but is mainly active against UVB rays. If you care about our corals and sea life, do not buy sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate – they’ve been shown to leach coral of its nutrients. Hawaii, and partially Florida, are already banning these ingredients for their beaches!
Emphasize protection of the skin around your eyes
I do agree that the emphasis made on the-around-the-eyes area which is never early to begin caring for! The skin around the eyes is thin and sensitive. With aging, the collagen production diminishes, skin becomes even thinner, thus producing more fine lines, dark under-eye areas and increase in dryness.
Best Anti-aging Products for Skin Care Routine in 30s
Eye cream gel for dark circles and puffiness with Peptides and Hyaluronic Acid. You can read more and buy it HERE.

Skin Care Routine In Your 40s
As you enter middle age, skin changes become even more noticeable. This is the time to consider adding collagen-boosting products like these that will make your skin look younger and healthier.
“Using a retinol-based cream is important at this stage because it will speed up cell turnover,” says Adriana Martino. But because retinol can be drying, you may want to use it only once or twice a week.
This is one of my favorite topics where I explain types of retinol products and a difference among all of them. Check out this Anti-aging Retinoid Therapy topic to benefit your choice of skin care products.
This is the time to schedule regular facials to keep your skin healthy and refreshed, and to talk to your dermatologist about getting a good chemical peel. Moisturizing is also more important now than in your 30s, because your skin becomes dryer as you begin to lose estrogen. Adriana Martino suggests using gentle daily moisturizers containing ceramide.
One of the best ways to maintain skin structure is its collagen. As collagen diminishes through the life of our biological body, we need to take an effort to maintain it. One of the best ways to encourage collagen production in your body is myofascial release. Maintaining flexibility and collagen replenishment are something nobody can say a “no” to!
If you’ve never heard of fascia, check out my detailed post on Self Myofascial Release that can be done right out of your home.
Best Anti-Aging Skin Care Products for 40s
Here are some of my favorites with the Ceramides in the skin product formula. I evaluate each product not just for the key ingredients, but also for the entire formulation. I do not use products with PEGs, petroleum-based ingredients. So, these suggestions I make come from my strict personal approach to skin care.

Skin Care Routine In Your 50s
For women in their 50s, the emphasis is on adding even more moisture. “I would recommend using an oil-based moisturizer at this point and increasing your use of retinol products with a higher concentration. I also recommend laser therapy at this stage,” says Adriana.
Things like Thermage can tighten loose skin. You can definitely use serums with peptides, as well. To wash your face, use a cream cleanser for extra softness. Menopause and hormone use can also make skin more sensitive, so baby your skin by adding new products gradually to make sure they don’t irritate your face.
Skin Care Products for Women in 50s
The more mature the skin, the thinner it is. It is vital that we provide the key products to support our skin’s functions throughout all phases of skin caring. Here are some of my favorites that have high quality ingredients and age-defying qualities.

Peptides for skin care routine over 50
Quality peptides can gently exfoliate old skin and encourage the new skin cells to come to the surface. Fruit peels are some of the examples that can do this job painlessly while providing food on the cellular levels.
Peptides are made of amino acids which are the building blocks for proteins. When amino acids link together, they form an amino peptide. The beauty of amino acids is that when we introduce them into the body, they have an ability to form those proteins that our body needs.
Applying peptides daily to the skin slows down the loss of collagen, thus supporting a more youthful appearance with less wrinkles.
You may know that around a 30-year mark we lose about 1% or more of collagen in our skin each year of our lives.
Giving the skin what it needs is super important to maintain its health and beautiful looks.
Elina Organics Fruit Peel
This Elina Organics formula is used at night, under your night cream. It gently exfoliates and removes the sun damage. It boasts with anti-bacterial properties while gently exfoliating the skin and revealing young skin cells on the surface. You can truly benefit from this skin care formula by using it regularly. You can learn more and buy it HERE.
Peptide Skin Masks
Elina Organics Natural Peptide Mask
This peptide mask is an absolute must-have for all with dry skin. And as we age, it is one of the skin care products that will help you to repair your skin on a cellular level. Just remember how peptides support protein production, and one of such proteins is collagen!
In addition, this unique formulation repairs melanin to allow your skin look smoother and brighter. All ingredients are from the plant world, thus making it smell like heaven. You can get your hands on this formula HERE.
Finally, as you approach your 60s, your diet and exercise habits are just as important as the beauty products you use. “I recommend a healthy lifestyle in general to make sure your skin looks young,” says Martino.
Regular Vigorous Physical Exercise is vital for our skin health and cancer prevention as well.

This is helpful. Thank you for reminding us to wear sunscreen. Honestly, there are times that I am just lazy but after reading this, I will make sure to wear one with at least 30 SPF.

Yes, so much to learn and know about to keep our skin beautiful and young.
I so appreciate my dads sister for this one as she introduced me to a good skin care regimen when I was 13 years old… and have been using skincare ever since. It really makes a difference and you are never too young to start!
Melissa,
So happy to hear that your aunt was a crucial pain in making your a fan of a good skin care routine!

It gives me motivation to dig out more facts and state of things to improve and maintain your beautiful skin.
I had no idea that different years needed different care. I just figured, wash, moisturize and protect.

As your body changes, so does the skin care routine. Glad this post has opened some new things for you.

I bought 2 of the products you posted about!
I love being able to read about all these. Times have really changed when it comes to skin care.
Kathy,
You are so on point! I am reading up on the latest studies and findings from different skin and medical journals all the time. It is truly mesmerizing to see the changes and approaches skin care is taking.
I really need to look into a skincare routine. Past couple years have really aged me and I don’t want it to get worse.
Amy,
Once you realize it, it is a matter of figuring out your regular skin care routine.
Begin with the simple things you know you’ll do. But you will do it consistently.
This skin care routine sounds great. I really need to get some of these products to start using on my own skin!
I love the way you segmented this informative post by age groups, so clear and easy to understand! I am in my 50’s and am all about peptides these days!
Go for it, Rita!
Happy to support you with the information and facts about the skin care and skin health.
We live in a dry climate and so having a good moisturizer is very important to me. Very informative article, Laura!
Anne Marie,
I found from my personal experience that a quality and regular moisturizer is the key to skin’s beauty and health.
Great topic! Most of us just use the skin care routine that we are used to. We don’t try or look for something better or what’s best for us. Thanks for posting!
I take great pride in my skin. I take care of it any way I can.
These are some really great skincare routines by the decade. I love learning more about ways to take care of my skin as I age. I admit, I always put full skincare on the back burner 🙁 I need to change that.
Thanks for the great information!!! As I get older, I have been noticing subtle changes, but I’m already starting to look at what I use as time goes on.
I love a good skin care routine. I need to learn to follow it more often though. I’m glad you were able to share about this. I need to work on a better skin care routine.
As I get further into my 40’s I find that my skin needs more and more attention. I’m always looking for new skin care routines.
I like the different skin care routines.
Really nice post! I found the tips here to be quite helpful. I haven’t looked much into Retinols before, but I’m going to do a some more research on this– thank you!
One note that I have, in general: I have a general aversion to the term “anti-aging.” (Also, it seems like it’s mostly used in reference to women– but that’s another discussion!) While I of course understand the concept, I wish that we could/would collectively find a suitable alternative… one that might not carry such stigma to aging and growing older. It might seem a bit subtle, especially because we’re so used to hearing the term “anti-aging”; but IMHO the negative connotations are still there.
Wearing SPF is definitely important to me. I burn easily just driving in my car. A good moisturizer I believe is important no matter your age to help keep the skin hydrated and prevent dryness.
Thank you so much for the comprehensive information. It is extremely helpful to focus on the appropriate skincare for my age group. I need to go back to a regular skincare regime for sure.
Thank you for all of the tips and information! I’m going to be 39 next month and I need to take better care of my skin.
This is such a wonderful and helpful guide for me with my skincare needs. I am 55 and faithful about doing my nightly regime. I may have to regroup after reading. I so worry about lines and wrinkles. Looking in the mirror and watching my skin aging is a hard thing! Just wish I would have listened to my mom when I had that beautiful tan every year!
Time for peptides! Off to shop!
This post is very helpful for determining the proper skin care routine for women at different stages of their life. I wish I had this information when I was younger.
I remember this post. I need to remember some of the things you posted. I am now 6 years older…
So much useful knowledge in one article. I never realized that depending on your age how your routine should be for treating your skin. THanks for sharing!!
This was very helpful. Sun protection is so important to me.
Antoinette,
Sure it is. I am paying more attention to the sun protection than ever. I’ve seen sun damage to my skin early in my life. And was so scared that decided not to sunbathe on purpose any more.
I am 63. Thankfully I was never a sun worshiper and I quit smoking a long time ago. I do wish that these products were available when I was younger.
I’m in my early 40s and have bought too many anti wrinkle products that it just becomes confusing. I love how you simply laid it out with tons of great info plus products, thank you so much! I found a couple of products that look perfect for me.
All such helpful tips! Thanks for sharing 🙂
This is very useful information. Now I need a good eye cream. Thanks for the recommendations!
I think that none of these products were available when I was in my 30s, 40s or 50s.
Now that I’m 71 I’m just thankful that I didn’t like sun bathing.
I’m in my 50’s, so the CBD cream interests me. Until recently, I had no idea CBD was used in skincare but I’d be curious to try it.
This is a very helpful guide. I have always tried to take care of my skin but the older I get the more “needy” it gets.
Dana,
I am glad you got some usefulness from this post. I found for myself that when I listen to my skin’s needs, and do the regular care routine, it thrives.
My skin can really use a new care routine. It is looking old and no glow
Monique,
What is great about our skin is that it can spring up to life and liveliness fairly quickly. Just begin doing one thing you are not currently doing. For example, begin moisturizing your skin before going to bed every day. Stick to this routine until it becomes your second nature. Then, introduce another piece into your daily skin care.
This way, you won’t be overwhelmed and will enjoy the journey to a healthier skin condition.
And what’s more amazing is that your skin will show off its bright side. The people around you will begin commenting how refreshed you look, how glowing your skin is.
helpful tips and products
I don’t really have a skincare routine, but as I getting older I found it very important.
Cleansing your skin daily can be your skin care routine!
It sounds long, but it can be very basic, yet very effective.
I love this. And thanks for adding the links I need more retinol products in my routine
Amanda,
You are welcome.
Enjoy the products from the links.
The majority of them are tested by me, many of them I bought myself, some were provided by my request.
I research the product’s ingredients first before I agree to review or want to buy anything.
I have very high standards what goes over my skin.
The ingredients are getting into our blood stream almost immediatedly, so it is very important to keep them wholesome and non-toxic.
Wow wow wow. You really did a nice job in writing this. Thanks for teaching us. Thank you.
Ebuka,
You are so welcome!
I’ve been into the skin health subject since childhood, literally. I enjoy to bring up to the surface the things that are not very prominent in the public domain, yet very important to know about.
I agree, when it comes to skincare, the needs vary according to age and skin type. The earlier we start taking care of our skin the better for us later on.
Kevin,
I am with you, the earlier we begin care after our own skin, the so much better our overall health will be, not just the skin.
I’m getting close to 30 and I really need to change up my skin routine! Love this post!
Amber,
I’m happy you found something of use to you personally.
Feel free to get back with me, I’ll share what I know!
I need to invest in skincare as I’m approaching 30. I need to try out your recommendations!
Wonderlust,
Begin with the basics. Don’t try to add a ton of products and then be overwhelmed.
Begin with just one product and get used to it.
Eye cream would be the greatest one at your age to incorporate into your daily routine.
But you know the best, once you learn the ropes of skin care.
Also, don’t be afraid to schedule your appointment with a dermatologist to hear what they have to say.
I have never thought about anti-aging cremes before. It is interesting to read that there is so many diverse products for it out there.
You bet there are so many out there skin care products. I made my priority to use only the ones that are non-toxic and apply to my highest standards.
These days, there are more companies who can offer quality products I am after.
Yes, we need a skin care regimen to make our skin healthy 🙂
Dan,
I have my skin care routine and vary it here and there depending on my skin’s needs.
I so agree. Taking care of our skin and self is but a wise decision. Our older self would definitely thank our younger self for giving skincare a part of her life.
Skin will show what kind of care we give it, for sure.
I love this for anti-aging skin care I use some anti-aging beauty products for my skin. Thanks for this wonderful tips it would help a lot
You are so welcome. It would be even better if you could really up your skin care.
I seriously love these! Thanks for all the tips!
Toni,
You are welcome, my friend.
MY wife is interested about beauty products. I am sure she will look into this.
Ramil,
Any woman would love to have a gorgeous skin. But it takes a little effort like daily skin care routine.
I could use a little skin restoring. Do you have a serum you’d recommend? I’m not crazy about the one I’m currently using.
Hi Fatima,
There are different serums for different purposes. Let’s talk what your needs are, so I could point to my known and researched favorites. Or at least identify what you really need in a skin product to address a problem area.
I am in my 30th and it was good to read what skincare routine I should follow. Whilst I do some of the these things, I definitely not exfoliate enough.
Joanna,
Keep in mind that I have highlighted the key areas that need to be paid attention to during each of our aging decades.
But what each woman should know is that taking good care of her skin day and night, each season, using sustainable and effective products, eating whole foods, drinking spring water, exercising can achieve the skin glow like nothing else!
Please continue with your curiosity and tending to your skin!
This is the right time for me to be more responsabile to my skin. I should try some new products. That Peptide mask sounds good for me!
Catalina,
There are many quality skin care products that can boost our skin’s health and looks.
Those are some wonderful tips to keep in mind and having a skincare routine is quite important.
Lyanna,
Skin care routine can truly bring us the benefits of remaining strong and beautiful all our lives. And prevent unwanted changes in skin.
Loved this topic you encountered in this blog. I think that this is particularly important for models. Thanks for the info
Norma,
Yes, it is important for models. But it is more important for a regular person who is NOT a model.
I want to feel and look great at any moment of my life. And I am not a model!
I definitely need to start taking better care of my skin. I’m such a novice when it comes to what I need to use. This is a really helpful post.
Sherry,
First, identify your problematic areas and. Second, just keep an eye and research any product you want to use.
Personally, I am very strict what products comes to my beauty counter!
I do not use any products that have a tone of toxic for skin ingredients that are OK by the beauty industry standards.
Our skin absorbs a dozen pounds of beauty stuff that does not make us beautiful or healthy.
So, only the truly best crosses my home line and my blood streams!
I really need to get into a routine for skincare. My face skin has been really going crazy lately.
Amy,
A good skin care routine will prevent a lot of negative emotions in the future. Begin now. Reach out if you need some help.
My skin has changed so much since I turned 40. It’s definitely drier and more wrinkly. I’ll be looking into upping my skincare game. Thanks for the tips.
Lisa,
Definitely. Our skin is prepping itself for a huge hormonal jump.
Starting anti-aging product use at an early age is probably what helped my skin look so young. I started using creams at age 30.
Tara,
You are one of very few women who has been leading with her own experience. Bravo, GRL!
I’m already using different anti aging
cream even if it’s quite early. It makes me feel secure. Just saying.
Rose Ann,
It’s not early for the skin to get a boost from the skin care that goes hand-in-hand with food adn active lifestyle. Bravo, GRL!
